Amp closet?????

So basically in my place the room i track in also has a pretty good sized closet, basically the walls are so thick that if i am tracking a cab in there you pretty much can not hear it at all,

If i was to slam a cab in there with a mic and just close mic it a inch from the grill, would this turn out just as good as doing this in the middle of my big room?

i'm thinking if you close mic that close then the room shouldn't have anything to do with the sound, but im not to sure, this will just allow me to track live amps and do remaps at any hour.



If you have any info please share.
 
The common response is that you'll get a very boxy, closety sound on your recordings. Even though you're close-micing, there are still reflections bouncing around in there and a tiny bit are still going to make it into the mic.

I wouldn't mind hearing examples of the same (as close as possible) setup in a room vs a closet, though.
 
Yeah dude later tonight ill do some guitar tracking to compare the to, yeah i felt like the FREQ would bounce around like that, i just don't know if it would really make it bad in the mix, i'm not to sure.

I honestly don't mind tracking in my live room, its just really late sometimes i like to work on tracks because i normally sleep in the day lol.


i mind just end up treating the whole closet, after i get some new monitors.
 
If you can throw a pretty heavy blanket over the rig in the closet without interfering with your mic, you might be in decent shape.

Yeah i thought about this also, but i have a mesa oversized 4x12, and it sets up pretty high so the blanket always drops down a shit ton, its hard to explain but i have to get my other cab put in front of the mesa then kinda bridge the 2 lol, i felt the sound was weird as fuck when i did that tho lol.

my mic stand is real sensitive and just a little touch of the blanket and it moves like a mother fuckers, its just a basic kick drum stand.
 
Yeah, with a sturdy mic stand, you could get all ghetto-extremo -IE- cover the cab with a big heavy comforter, put something on top of the cab to hold the blanket on, then go under the covers with a flash light and set up your mic.
 
I tried doing guitars in a smaller contained room once, and there was definitely alot of boxyness compared to the larger, more open room that I normally put the cab in. I could imagine a closet would be even worse, although I didnt put a blanket over the cab as suggested above so that may have helped. I think out of necessity I ended up using the boxy tracks from the smaller room on the recording I was doing, and they ended up sounding fine after fixing it up with some EQ. Not optimal but definitely workable if you have to.

Yeah i'm about to post a Reamp i just did couple mins ago i think it sounds pretty good actually.
 
Word. The only thing with blanket thing is... It's been a while, but I never had to do it with a high-volume amp. I've used that way twice. Once was a 5150 II with the volume at 3 or 4 and the second time was a 6505, volume around 3 or 4 again. So the blanket did the job killing reflection in those instances. I can't say how well that would work with something like a Triple XXX or a Savage 120, which I prefer to track at VERY high volumes.

Yeah the reamp i just posted was with my 5150 and 808, i feel it sounds pretty good how it is in that. im never really happy with my tones untill i get them in a mix lol.

i agree with the boxy sound, any advice how i should EQ that shit?
also i do not have C4 i just have the multi band comp in cubase 5.

I use to have my waves plugins in my old pro tools rig but i don't have that anymore.
 
I'd try some surgical cuts at 800hz and 1200hz first. If that flattens it out too much, then try a SMALL boost at 3000hz to put the life in it.

As far as the multi-band settings. I don't have Waves at home either, but I get good results with ReaXcomp in Reaper. Here's a pic of Andy's. You just want to compress the area between 60hz and 300hz, roughly. Get your setting in line with the performance and then adjust your threshold and make up gain to taste, until you get that nice, thick punch.
