Room Tone on Rhythm Guitars: Gojira Tone Demonstration

Sorry if I was a turd... I agree with 100% with trying new stuff. Hey Jeff didn't like the tone I had for a bands recording I did but it was what the client wanted so meh.... What info do you have for the mic set up for that album from Gojira?

I totally love the room mic combined tone. In fact, I couldn't resist on trying it myself instantly. Seems that I can't get a proper room sound like the one you have, because my room seems unsuitable for this. Too much phase issues. I hope I can still experiment and find a better setting though, but my hopes aren't high. It's a great idea and indeed it sounds really refreshing to me as opposed to always using the same kind of setting. Great thread.

I like your tone very much man, mainly the blended one. I like how it sounds heavy but kinda loose at the same time. Reminds me of bands like Mastodon...

I shouldn't have posted the individual mics in this case as they are two halves that make up the whole tone so they don't make much sense by themselves. I was trying to be helpful to someone, guess I was wrong.

Not for me! I dig the tone because it sounds unique but not bad at all IMO.
That tone probably works well in a mix i can imagine!
Thanks for your comparison, because you just got me into recording with a room mic again. It actually DOES have a huge impact in your tone, i think especially in the "beef" areas and low-end areas it works real nice and also isn´t hard to tame when mixing.

Thanks again man!

It's incredibly hard to judge the tone you posted because 80% of FMTS' 'guitar tone' is really in the mix itself. You know how terrible intro to backbone sounds, that is, compared to the mixed version of that same riff just a few seconds into the song. So really, for this kind of a tone to work properly, you need an overly honky/present mix to begin with so that guitars don't stand out much, else they'll lack life, like here. That being said, I believe that tone is very usable in the right context, if with a bit more low end! :D

What are you using for a room mic? If you are using a single cardioid mic then you will encounter phase problems. If all you have to use are cardioid mics then you have to use two of them and use them in a stereo pattern like XY, ORTF, or pseudo-fig-8. I haven't tried spaced pair, but that might be neat too. Experiment :)
