I'm sure many of you have heard this. This is the album that made me a fan of Fredrik Nordstrom. The production is incredible, as well as the guitar tone.

My question is, can any of you tell me what kind of mics they might be using for the guitars? I know there's probably a 57 in there somewhere but there's some of you on here who can spot different mics in recordings immediately.

Also, guitars are recorded through an ENGL of some sort and an ENGL 4x12 cab, I believe.

EDIT: After doing deeper research, I've discovered the secrets from the magician himself:

"Maelstrom: I believe you’ve said you like Engl guitar amps. Did you use those to record In Sorte Diaboli?

Fredrik Nordström: We used two Engl heads... a new version called Special Edition. We put up the head with an Engl cabinet, and we slaved the pre-amp signal from the Special Edition to my Savage 120. Then, we put up a Marshall cabinet up and recorded both. We miked it as I always do: one SM57 straight forward, and one SM57 at a 45 degree angle."

The whole thing can be read here

There is a whole sticky about Nordström micing on the Production Tips forum, and there is a picture on his studio website of it.
