So I've been getting some conflicting advice regarding how to handle my guitar tone mids. Especially with ampsims & IR use.

Should I be cutting mids to about 2-3 at the head?
Or should I keep mids at about noon and rely on eqing to cut out the nasties?
As a general starting guidline of course. I know every mix is different.

Yeah man just use your ears :) Some amps are really nasal naturally. I've found this with 5150s (and the like), as well as JCM800's. They are super barky and nasal. Hence you end up with your mids a lot lower than say you would on a mesa.

I think I fight mostly with my 5150 modelled ampsim and my 6505 head.
I feel like I never get my mid impact with them. Mesas seem to easily do what I need.

Is corrective EQ before the IR a poor choice?

Totally depends on the amp+cab+microphone combination. As a rule though, I tend to boost the mids on the amp when I'm recording with my 2x12 with T75's. If I'm recording with the Vintage Century's, I don't boost the mids as much and I tone down the treble.

This will apply even with IR's of course. So just give it a try.

If your host supports channel presets, it's good to get a range of IR+EQ presets, and just swap between them in context with the rest of the music. You can find which tones are best for the track this way.

Just close your eyes and turn the knob until you like the sound. Seriously.

Don't rely on post processing to get you the tone you're looking for - get it as close as possible at the source.
