ancient nordic gods

I dont think that very many people still belive in the Norse Gods, though there are a few organizations that worship the asa gods...

To quote Wolfen Society, 'the only god I praise is me.'

As to the members of AA, in the current issue of Metal Maniacs Johan Hegg is quoted as saying, " 'I'm an atheist,' says Hegg. 'I can't understand people trying to sell Christianity.' "

im not, but i think it si cool anyway

by the way, do AA themself really believe in it ??

I can only answer for myself, but religion is not my bag. I concider myself an ateist and I don't believe in any religion. I think religion in general is an excuse for people not to think for themselves. The Norse Mythology is more an inspitation and a philosophy of life to me, and I try to live by it.

Well said!

I don't believe in any form of high power or deities. I happen to know a lot of the modern Asatru however, as I know a lady who's in the charge for the organization of that in Denmark.

I think its not a question of faith. In my opinion the norse gods only symbolize different ascpects of the human being (and that is enough in my eyes). For me it isn't possible to define if the gods ever existed in a similar form as they are descriped in the old texts ('cause we havn't any proofs of their existance) . You can believe that Thor once walked the land, you can believe in all this "fantasy-stuff" mentioned in the texts, but I think it isn't the right way to look at it. For me it isn't possible to believe in it, 'cause for believing in trolls and shit I'm too scientific.
Perhaps they existed, but to give you an answer you would have to ask someone who lived in these times, and that isn't possible.
Perhaps gods were created by someone living who only tried to help the people in difficult times to survive, perhaps we created it for the purpose of feeling that something (or someone) is more powerful than a human will ever be... or to explain the behaviour of people or to dictate a view...or to explain something strange (you must think of the possibilities of science)...or other aspects. We don't know and that will never change, 'cause the thoughts of gods are as old as the human race.
I think the knowledge of the religion of the viking era isn't complete, 'cause not many recordings are available. We have the Edda and other things but escpecially the Edda is like the bible... full of stories you can believe or not. It is like a fairytale. These texts contain different aspects of all kind of things, of life etc. I take what I want and the rest not.

So it's more a question of personal attidute and interpretation.

At least I don't believe in the old gods the 'normal' way...I believe in them as a kind of different aspects of life and personality.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong...in the end it doesn't matter.

I hope it is understandable:D

i dont believe in religion. most religions were created by governments to get more money for themselves through churches!!! and if god and all this crap realy did/does/will exist they shouldnt make us worship them to go to there heaven or whatever the hell you get out of it! but i do think the whole mythology thing is cool though, i dont believe in it but they got some cool stories and stuff!

I can't help but re-state a post I did on the Children of Bodom forum on the topic of "Do you believe in God"... I would think it would be more appreciated here, as good as CoB are- they sure do bring in alot of poser, moron fans..

"Simply put I do not believe in any god man has created... I would say the gods man has created are archetypes of the values of the people whom created them- as it were, I would "Worship" the Norse gods, they are strong, powerful, dual-sided (evil and good, simply) more human, prideful, more or less: Everything that makes a human a great human to me. I have always thought Judeo-Christianity a vile plague upon the earth, sodomizing its followers into a life of submission and faith in things that dont exist... a rich fantasy life for the weak of mind and conformist of wit, that tells humanity to deny a whole side of themselves, the 'dark side' of humanity some would say.

another nice quote I picked up from someone on UM:

"Jesus Christ was crucified for Nothing, and God is worshipped for even less." (Good quote, whomever I ripped that off of, its a really good quote).

An Archetype that inspires only one side of humanity, will fail, has failed & is failing now.

But then again, I suppose it is possible for a higher form of being to truly exist, some higher dimensional life-force that had some part in our Universe's creation... but I honestly doubt that any peoples of the earth could fathom it, to believe so is arrogant.

"gods only exist as long as people believe in them, atleast until the answers come to us the only way they can, every mans destiny- death"

Hah, following the word of the Judeo-Christians, Ideals born from a people slapped around due to weakness for thousands of years... of course they would create an archetype that promotes peace & equality among all men. Fantasy applied to reality is a morons ideal." -JRL

So I personally do not believe in any form of Divinity made up by man, but I do not rule out the possibilty of their existance, as I have not the knowledge to do so, but using the gods of men as an archetype- the Scandinavian Pagan gods & goddesses are certainly a better role-model for us to follow.

LOL this has nothing to do with this thread well it kinda does but i think its funny............ANYWAY here in Australia i have many friends going to Catholic schools and them not being catholic.......They have long hair and Facial hair and this is a law in Australia that if u go to a catholic school you arnt allowed to have either.................FUNNY THING IS!!!!!!!!! Who do they all worship at a catholic school? GOD and JESUS thats right...........And what did god and or jesus have?????????? LONG HAIR AND FACIAL HAIR

THOSE FUCKING LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!they are sooo dumb fucking 80's style!

i'm agnostic. basically, i dont give a crap, and i dont bother trying figure any of 'it' out. 'it' being the universe, divinity, god, gods, higher power, whatever. i figure that if there exists something that could be considered a god or gods, it would be impossible for a human to understand. humans cant comprehend the meaning of infinity. to try and do so with something that would be called a god is useless and futile. i think that religions are an attempt for humans to find answers to everything they cant find one for, essentially its born of ignorance. i am appalled at the hypocracy of religious schools that teach their pupils that legends and myths of the native americans were fabricated to explain their world because they didnt know why the coyotes howl, or the sun rises, or clouds form, etc, yet christianity is to be accepted without question, all the biblical stories are absolute truth (noah really did, by himself, build a ship big enough to hold 2 of every animal in the world and float around for 40 days). what bullshit. christianity is, to me, equivalent to any other religion, monotheistic or pagan, it doesnt really matter its nature, but what they all have in common. their own set of beleifs about how the universe was created and how this and that came to be.

a lot of this sounds rather athiest, im sure, but it is rather amazong how so many of these and other faiths have lasted for thousands of years, through so many generations. then you have the people who claim to have met god or been visited by a saint or had a vision of whoever, and you have to wonder if theres really something behind it. especially the longevity of those old religions, and the fact that millions throughout history have been willing to murder and die for them, all over the world. maybe its just a common facet of the human psyche, of maybe there really is something out there. maybe all earthly religions are incorrect but there is some kind of higher power/being/spirit/whatever. ever think about that? me either ;)

I dont know how much good falling on an imaginary god is doing for people in the long run...

especially since some of those same people blame god for everyday human occurances... shit happens, and people use god as a scapegoat...

In the end, I would think it a hollow victory, a strong person would confide in another human being, that way the person can actually just get help, a human can be much stronger than most give them credit for, many think that living for an afterlife with god is the only reason to live, when simply- theres so much more that these people just tune out...

Simply being here as a Man, with music, beauty, love, hate, and the endless fight for self-improvement is what makes me go on in this world, if one dies, I know it will be painful- because in this mortal coil we do make strong mental bonds to one another, but in the face of such tests on us, the ideal response is to be strong and seek comfort in the fact that your final destiny is death also, and mayhaps, in some awe-inspiring, glorious way, that we shall meet again in some afterlife.

But on this earth, we know not our after-death fates, so all we can do is continue to exist, and make the best of our existance.

AND FOR FUCKS SAKE CRANK UP THE GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKIN METAL! HAVE SOME FUCKIN FUN, WAKE YOUR GODDAMN NEIGHBORHOOD UP AT THE EARLY MORNING HOURS DRUNK AND BLASTING DEATH IN FIRE!

(everyone like my little philosophy trip?)

i like the tip :)

christianity has done some horrible things.. err driven people to do horrible things, like the crusades, the spanish inquisition... converting various peoples to christianity which causes them to lose much of their culture and tradition...i think that is a huge tragedy.

but it also does good things, on more than just the personal level. example: in sub saharan africa where the aid epidemic is the #1 cause of death for adults and children, some areas are a huge deal healthier and better off because the catholic missionaries there prech abstinence and the protestants pass out condoms.

back to norse mythology, i dont beleive in it, but i love reading them!

Well if you ask me..........I also do not believe in any religion i am also an athiest BUT! if i had to believe in somethng and i do......ITs Amon Amarth themselves.......These guys are GODS TO ME!!! I worship them.....AA u should start up your own cult HAHAHAHAHA! nah probs not a good idea.........

Well, I read a lot of interesting stuff in this thread.

I was one time talking to an old friend of mine turned religion nut. I asked him what he got out of god, jesus, and being christain. The word "christian" made him cringe, and he got pretty upset with me. He said "I am not now a christian, nor will I ever be." And I said to him "But you believe in God, I've heard you mention Jesus..." And he said "Well, I learn from the teachings of Jesus, whether he had a connection with god or not, Jesus was a good man." So I replied "That kinda makes you christian, though" And he said "No, God hates it when you try to put something so large in such a small box. I don't goto church. I rarely read the bible. I have been told what god wants me to do, and that's that."

I learned a lot from him that day. Most importantly, I learned that anything in a book... The Bible, the Edda, etc. Isn't to be taken too literally. If it is, you lose track of the purpose. Everything we know of, is of course man made. So to follow any religion closely is following another man. It's important to find whats in you, and follow it.

I'm sure that is way off track of everything, but it is my thoughts on the subject of nordic gods. Which is... Fuck, I don't know. I'm totally lost... Follow your heart. Not a book written by somebody else.
