And the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Act goes too....

I'm a huge DT fan and was obviously hoping they'd win. Do I agree that the Hard Rock and Metal performances are combined into one? No, they should be separate. That being said, Foo Fighters's Wasting Light was an amazing record and deserved to win their awards. Anyone who's attacking them and saying that band isn't talented, needs to get their heads out of their asses.

I'd love to see them give an award to an actual metal band, one day.

Yeah, 'cause Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead and Judas Priest aren't metal, right? Who do you think deserves a grammy, Edguy? Sabaton?

The funny thing is that some of the people around here (not you necessarily Nina) complain that X metal band didn't win, but would accuse them of selling out if they did... Just enjoy the Grammys for what they are and allow yourselves to get out of the metal bubble a bit! It's worth it sometimes...

Fill my head with more wisdom, for my brain is a petulant sponge for your pus like words of brilliance.

ROTFL

By the way nailz, thanks for sharing this (the prime example of why music is heading into a scary direction nowadays):

Foo Fighters make more money for the industry and help employ more people in the industry that the Grammy Board knows and loves. That's why they won. What is sad is that the board is 1300 people who vote in each catagory. There is no way on earth that those 1300 people actually had KNOWN those bands and songs, NOMINATED them, and then voted on them.

If this were true, do you really think in one year 1300 board members would have said, "Out of ALL the metal I heard this year, I really dug the live version of DISSIDENT AGGRESSOR off the TOUCH OF EVIL - LIVE album Priest put out this year"

This is the main part that bothers me. Its the actual nomination, not the voting, that's the problem.

Sure, even if they want to "give long running bands their due" as they obviously did with PRIEST and MOTORHEAD, at least take 30 seconds out and do a GOOGLE search to see what their latest album during the period was and nominate them for their recent work.

HEY. I said I'd "love to see" it happen.

I've never watched the Grammys before IN MY LIFE. So I've never seen it!

But I'm glad it's happened! Even though I hate Metallica.. I guess they count.

 Hey, even when you start watching the Grammy's you probably still won't see it... They usually hand the Best Metal/Hard Rock performance in the "Pre-televised" portion of the show...

On that thought, yeah, I'd love to see it happen too!! hahaha

I was 100% srs. Prove my opinion wrong.

Is this a trick challenge? This is like saying "Prove my opinion that acorn jelly tastes bad wrong!" It's your opinion, and it's fine. That's cool. I actually thought you were being sarcastic. I know that the Foo Fighters are somehow enjoyed by a lot of people on this forum, I don't get it, I can't stand them, but I don't expect anyone trying to prove my opinion of them wrong, lol.

Dude has worked with everyone from Kurt Cobain to Josh Homme to King Diamond to Steven Pearcy to Lemmy to Wino and was even supposed to work with Chuck Schuldiner before he died (he did though raise funds for Chuck's cancer treatment). He even most recently played with Foos live on a moving truck to interrupt a Westboro Baptist Church protest. I can't think of a more versatile, competent, original, talented musician and songwriter in rock and roll alive today.

Yah, he's successful at what he does, clearly, and he seems to enjoy performing and doing cool shit. I have a lot of respect for the band, they're just not what I picture as the pinnacle of rock and roll today. I don't think they've ever been the pinnacle of rock and roll. I don't think they've ever really PLAYED rock and roll. IMO, Alt-Rock and Rock and Roll are two very distinct genres of music. For the purpose of the grammies I can see groping them together, but saying The Foo Fighters play the same style of music as AC/DC? No.

Well, in terms of mainstream rock music, Foo Fighters are, for my money, the best rock band of the last 15 years.

That's just genre nitpicking...Foo Fighters are very much a rock band.

Yeah it actually kind of is a trick challenge. :P

Getting into a debate over whether or not alt rock is rock and roll or if it isn't (or whether or not the Foos are even alt rock to begin with) isn't something I'm all that interested in doing. But to answer your last question - actually yes, at least the new one anyway. You should probably listen to it. :D

Nah, I got sick of AC/DC after the 50 minute Back in Black album. I just wish they'd play something other than "You shook my black hells bells all night long" if they were going to pull a Green Carnation type album.

nailz, out of curiosity, who do you believe IS at the pinnacle of rock and roll today?

I'm not sure I ever really considered that question before, but now that you've put it out there, I think my answer is actually the Foos.

I have no problem with the Foos winning anything as it's a damn good record. I have total respect for Dave as well. However, the Grammy voters hung off his cock a bit too much this year and showed their Tullism. If you are going to vote them in Hard Rock, then vote them in Hard Rock. No problem. If you are going to vote them in Rock, then vote them in Rock. No problem. However, it's beyond fucked up that they won both categories. It's a total slap to the other bands in both categories. I mean The Decemberists (great band) have just as much reason to groan as Dream Theater.

The Grammy Awards are like watching this cat. You know it's not going to change one fucking bit, but you keeping watching it over and over thinking it will..

Today? Now? I don't know. There hasn't been one Rock and Roll band to rise up for a long time that I've really been made aware of since U2. I don't expect any one band to achieve that kind of status again of "pinnacle" for a long time for Rock and Roll.

But if you forced me to say something, Muse, maybe? I'd probably say Muse. Maybe The Black Keys.

Well Mumford & Sons had the best 'rock' album of the year. But rock seems like a funky category for them as well.

We have to remember that the people voting on these awards are not necessarily required to listen to these albums, or to know anything about these bands. Past-winners are among those voting, so all those jazz, classical, rap, hip hop, country artists are voting for best 'hard rock'.

Yeah, I'd say the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam (man, I tried so hard to get into them...) are pretty much the two names that come to mind.

See, THAT is a huge problem imo.
