I know Rich Ward used a 120 watt Splawn Pro Mod/Marshall GB cabinet.

Did the greenbacks give any problems when you cranked it up to reach the sweet spot of the amp?

New question if I could maybe get an answer

Was the half power switch used on the Pro-Mod Rich used for the Mojo Disc? Full Power with amp cranked?

I've heard of guys using Greenbacks with their 5150s without a problem. I seem to remember My Dying Bride using 5150s with Greenback-loaded Marshall cabs, but I could be entirely wrong. I know Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has used Greenbacks forever with all manner of stuff that probably puts out more than 100 actual watts when turned up. 5150, SLO, Dual Recto, Mesa 2:90, etc...

I know an old non-master volume Marshall Superlead cranked up all the way is throwing down significantly more than 100 watts.

hey guys, the day you'll have a broken speaker don't yell at me.
A speaker that can handle 25watt (4 x 25Watt=100watt) won't last many years with a 120 watt amps.

That's the thing- they can handle more power than they're rated for. Most speakers can- look at Vintage 30s; Mesa and Marshall rate the ones in their cabs as 70 watts, even though they're officialy rated as 60 from Celestion.

Wattage ratings aren't exact- Marshalls and Rectos are rated at 100, Peavey stuff at 120, and Mesa Mark IVs and Bogner Shivas at 85, even though they all have the same four power tube compliment. And those aren't maximum ratings, like the peak power of a solid-state PA amp, either. All of those will put out 100+ watts when cranked. Unless you're blasting on 10 all the time, a Greenback loaded cab should be safe. I wouldn't run a Triple Recto or Diezel Herbert or something of that nature, rated 150 watts plus through them. But normal 100 watt (give or take) heads should be fine.

They're less efficient than modern speakers, so you'll get less volume out of them, and they start to break up pretty quickly.

I could be wrong on this but..

using 100-150 watt heads with greenback speakers at REASONABLE gigging volumes should be safe regardless of wattage ?

At a club even if you have a Triple Recto head, the sound guy will usually have you put your volume to the equivilant of another amp with less wattage.

When I recorded I used a Mesa Road King(only 2 6l6 @ 50 watts) and a 5150II both at obscenely loud cranked volumes(that i probably wouldnt ever do at a club) All seemed to be fine.

Hope im making sense so someone can correct me or not?

True or False?

Plus thanks to everyone responding, I was a little worried cause I was warned by the guys at Splawn that the Pro Mod amp was going to kill my greenbacks.

i stoped worrying at wattage of stuff after i got my messa solo 50 it kicked the crap out of the avt150 volume wise... thats a 100w descrepency!!! i guess you know when a speeker is being turned too loud.... it sounds like it's teatering on the edge of survival!.... good gear works with good gear.... match the ohmage and your away... if it sounds good do it :) \m/

(just to cover my ass.... cos i know i'm wide open on this..... i'm not condoning anything daft like plugging into a set of 8 ohm dt100's!!! .... they would actualy set on fire!!!!)

The loudest thing I've ever owned was a 1976 Marshall JMP 2204. 50 watts, and it pwn3d everything else I've ever used volume-wise. JCM 2000 TSL (No contest! The JMP on 2 was as loud as the TSL on 6.) Dual Recto, Mark IV, Stiletto, Bogner Shiva, etc. The only thing that ever came close was the Mark IV.

Just plug your headphones into the 4 ohm out of your Triple Rectifier. You'll be fine. ;)
