Announce a fucking update right now

i would like an album similar to dwot, V, or the odyssey. i liked symphony x during those times because they weren't too neoclassical and not too "progressive" (the only way i can describe it) yet they were different. Their whole appeal to me was that they had songs that were different, well written, epic, and the fact that they are all savage on their instruments. Since Paradise Lost, i feel they have lost some of the variation and neoclassical elements that made me like them in the first place. I know they are trying to go with a different, heavier sound or what not...but i think that they should kind of go back to their earlier sound. i feel that they are going the way of such bands as Metallica, or whatever in the sense that their new stuff isnt (at least to me) as good as their old stuff.

So wait, you say you love Divine Wings and V for not being "too neoclassical and not too progressive", despite those two releases being among the most indicative of both those sides of their sound? And then you say that once they changed around PL, you suddenly missed the neoclassical sound that you just said you didn't like emphasis on? :err:

Sorry, but I'm a little confused here.

i dont know how to describe it. and i didnt mention that by liking those albums i mean certain songs off the albums. by not too progressive i mean the songs i like off those albums dont have jarring time signatures and crazy syncopations commonly found in progressive metal. im all for polyrhythms and syncopation, but theres a point where it becomes too much for me and in my opinion kills a song.

By too neoclassical i mean like straight melodic minor scales, major scales, and whatnot. Like the songs ive heard from SX's self titled album were too neoclassical for me and i dont listen to them. and as another example, i don't listen to dream theater because to me they have that sound where the drums line up too much with what the other members are playing (and because of James...i respect his talent but i don't like his vocal tone).

And as for the part where i dont like much of the songs from PL and Iconoclast, i think its because they went with a heavier sound. Its like they changed classes, you know? from a mage to a warrior or something. lol.

I can't really see the difference in songwriting between, say, Wicked and Domination

i feel that the vocals are different, with domination having more of a growling distorted vocal aspect to it whereas wicked still had russell belting a lot without as much distortion. also i feel that the guitar riffs arent as varied in domination as they are in wicked and that the transitions between riffs in domination arent as, for lack of a better word, smooth. this i believe is why domination has a heavier feel and to me sounds less progressive than wicked.

dis nigga serious...

Actually, I was only half joking. I would love to see more songs like Through the Looking Glass. Fun stories, a little dark but not too dark, well known source material. I see a positive correlation between stories and song quality. The Wizard of Oz could work, though obviously not the way I described.

Peter Pan? Gulliver's Travels? MARY POPPINS!? Nah... There I go again.

For the record, Mike Lepond wrote on facebook that he's looking for a graphic designer for his solo album. At least there's something happening!

(I have found an interview from last february in which he said "Well right now Symphony X are writing songs for a new Album. In the meantime, I am working on a solo album, as well as doing numerous other projects")

I don't know about that. I do know that for every Storm Thorgerson there's a Roger Dean.

Just shy away from photoshop montages, CGI, and edge-glow/drop-shadow fonts like the bubonic plague they are.

Yeah he is fast and clean but besides No Boundaries he wrote some really cool songs too, he didn't just play the annoying Nitro things and weird quad guitar lol. He is also a great guitar teacher. Check his songs like Peace, China, Rain Forest, Prog etc if you want. :)

Can't wait for new Symphony X stuff anyway! :)
