any tips for smoothing cymbals? china, crashes, hats, maybe even the ride

currently what i do is a high pass, slight compression and some plate reverb but it sounds a bit naf.

anyone care bears care to share? eh! (that wos totally gay) :Smokin:

A compressor with a fast attack will kill a bit of the initial transient, that's what I always do if I want some silky smooth cymbals, also make sure you've got a nice reverb going there, but don't overuse it, just try to create a sort of "aura" around the cymbals that make them as if they are being played in a really nice room

Get better mics. Seriously.

Cheap SD condensers sound like shit on cymbals. I should know, I've gone through many, many pairs over the years.

I better you with;

use better cymbals AND better mics.

Hell, even better cymbals help 100%.

I highly recommend a pair of Oktavamod Mk012's. They're freakin' amazing.

+1
Have been using all sorts of $300-$500 dollars mics for oheads.
Was fortunate enough to lend a pair of Milabs and instantly, everyone who heard them mentioned how wonderful the cymbals sounded.
Not to mention also makes the drumkit sound way better too.

hey cymbals are all nice. sabian AAX metal cymbals polished up to perfection.

for the mix im going to do the cymbals were mic'd with two AKG c480B's. i dont know if there any use or not but i presume they're ok because dynamically they come out nice and shimmer well. im just trying to make them smoothen out more

kit was a pearl master series

The AKG c1000 is a little muffled. But thats great when you have to edit alot.
I would never use them for Rock stuff, and a "real" drumsound.
But they are amazing for deathmetal/deathcore/bree-.....) stuff with triggers.

When you low-cut the stereo track at maybe 600hz the cymbals still sound great!!!

I often use the beyerdynamc opus 53.
They are small and have a very straight frequency responce.
But I sometimes have problems with them because they are small condenser mics which react very fast.

looking forward to Rode NT5. Anyone using them?

cheers

Ah ok thanks Oz!!!!

I want to buy new OH mics this august, and they have to be killer:)
So I filtered out :

Octava 012
Rode NT5
AKG c1000

Oz what would you say because of your knowledge in drum recording
I think you will point on the Octava :)
