any tips for smoothing cymbals?

reverb on ohs???
mental.
id say either the oktavas or the NT5s
not the c1000 they SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCk

Ah ok thanks Oz!!!!

I want to buy new OH mics this august, and they have to be killer:)
So I filtered out :

Octava 012
Rode NT5
AKG c1000

Oz what would you say because of your knowledge in drum recording
I think you will point on the Octava :)

Just make sure to get Oktavamod mics. There's a world of difference between the stock Mc012 and the Oktavamod versions.

there's a guy named michael joly who's a first-rate mic tech who runs a site called oktavamod.com...and, as you can guess, he mods the crap out of oktava mics, along with a bunch of other ribbon/condenser mics

A compressor with a fast attack will kill a bit of the initial transient, that's what I always do if I want some silky smooth cymbals, also make sure you've got a nice reverb going there, but don't overuse it, just try to create a sort of "aura" around the cymbals that make them as if they are being played in a really nice room

Same!
What do you guys do release wise on cymbals?

this goes to all u guys, what are your choice of good cymbals especially for recording? Im using Zildjian ZHT primarily for the main crash 16" and 17".
