Anybody into Scar Symmetry ?

Talkin about new metal bands, any of you guys into Scar Symmetry ?

They recently released the studio album Holographic Universe (based on the book by Michael Talbot), and it's simply terrific.

SS are based in Avesta in the backlands of Sweden. They're a new group, but all members are experienced rock musicians (from different parts of Sweden).

They have about an equal amount of growl/shout and clean vocals, and some fabulous vocal harmonies, at times sounding like an angels choir. The vocalist on HU, Christian Älvestam, does all this, and his vocal range and expression is unbelievable. Sadly he's not in the band any longer.

There are two guitarists who do some amazing riffing and soloing. The drummer is completely upfront, the bassist great too.

SS cover a lot of musical territory and are at the same time highly original.

Guys, check out this top-league metal group :headbang:

Nicky.

Jonas and Nilsson are both great guitarist. Jonas was with Carnal Forge i believe (would have to look it up). Good album indeed.

Phil was a great vocalist back in the 80's, anything from projects to power metal was great. Now he just lost it. I would prefer to listen to old pantera then the new, just because i'm a 80's hair metal fan. Phil just plain sucks now.

Pantera is actually underrated. Only people who grew up on Pantera seem to like them nowadays, pre-teen internet experts who heard about the band by seeing a super joint ritual show don't agree usually.

wow, I'm actually amazed by how many of you guys don't like SS.... I didn't either, although I liked the sounding, but the songs seemed to be gay.

My fancy girlfriend likes them though!.. I guess that says it all...

Pantera deserve the hate coming really. I agree on Cowboys being pretty good heavy metal, but the tuff guy era really killed much of thrash and layed ground for what become nu metal, groove metal and metalcore.

all thrash bands sounding the same killed thrash, if anything, Pantera was breathing new life into the style.
Your view of history is a little skewed from high atop in Sweden, that's not how it went down at all. :D

They put out their most uncompromising, progressive, heavy album at the height of crappy nu metal bands and stale grunge (Far Beyond Driven) and disassociated themselves completely from that scene, delving more into influences from black metal and southern stoner bands during that time with the Great Southern Trendkill.

Did the riffs have groove? hell yes, that's the southern flavor they had, which had nothing to do with limp bizkit, but the blues.

Vulgar still gave birth to that shit methinks. Then came Machine Head, Sepultura went shit. It penetrated into melodic "death" through At The Gates. And a few years after that all hopes of decent metal beyond ultra underground died.

I grew up listening to then, CFH was the 1st metal album i ever purchased when i was young. I was inspired by them, both dime and then kirk hammett. So i'm always going to like Pantera no matter what.
