Anyone else going to Tamworth?

I'd like to one day. Of course, I did live there for a few months in the early 80s, but I've never been for the country music festival.

My missus reckons that this was in relation to Glenn Wheeler paying a bloke's cab fare to Tamworth to pick up chicks.

I was working a lot so I mostly just saw the acts around those I was working with...which worked out well because none of it was "I love my ute and so does my wife" type country music. Was all very alt/blues/country/rock stuff. Some fucking incredible acts and songwriters.

Karl Broadie (this guy is THE MAN, seriously, and a great mate) www.myspace.com/karlbroadie

James Blundell (greatest bloke in Australian music) www.myspace.com/jamesblundell

The Flood (just amazing...very soul/funk/blues/country. They kinda remind me of the KingsX of country music. http://www.theflood.com.au/

The Huckleberry Swedes (great alt/folk/country) http://myspace.com/huckleberryswedes

Melanie Horsnell (Fucking great alt/country/pop/folk...very sort of Dido kooky type stuff...great chick. She sung the song in that Maccas "inner child" ad and sings the french bits in the Johnny Walker ad with the invisible people) http://myspace.com/melaniehorsnell

Danny Widdicombe (fantastic guitarist...very emotive...GREAT voice...he has a fairly trad country sound to some of his music, but does a lot of different stuff...cool guy, great muso) http://myspace.com/dannywiddicombe

They're the main people I saw perform/worked with.

Seriously such a great festival. Bit of a rip cash wise if you have to pay for everything you go to. Crew passes are a godsend. But there's enough free that goes on that you can see a ton of awesome stuff over a few days.

That all sounds cool, and I'm glad to hear it wasn't all cousin-fucking stuff. How long did it go for? What were you working as?

it runs for 2 weeks, was there for one week.

what we were doing was recording 'instant live' bootlegs for Karl. We recorded all of his shows at the festival and had them for sale the next day on the merch desk. Had pre prepared basic packaging, recorded the gig in the day, went back to the house and mixed and rendered out the tracks to use and burned a bunch of copies of the show. Put it in the packaging and sold it :) less than 24 hour turn around on it. Was tons of fun and a great challenge...and proved to be pretty popular amoung the punters. Next year we're going to do it again but in a bigger and better way :)

During the festival we also had to drive out to Newcastle (Soldiers Point) to do a gig for James...so we drove from Tamworth to Newcastle in the day, lugged the JB gig in and out and drove back out to Tamworth that night to record Karl's gig the next day.

Had an amazing time. Did a lot of work, met some AMAZING people and made some great contacts.

That sounds like an excellent job. Shame it's only once a year! Any chance of ongoing work with others you've met?

Work pretty much all the time for JB when he tours. Usually promoter dependant, but we're his first choice for production crew when possible.

Have worked with Karl Broadie previously on tour...will no doubt work more with him in the future. Such a great guy and fantastic songwriter/musician.

Picked up some local PA work with an artist from Brisbane who was nominated for best new talent at the Golden Guitars.

Through making contacts with a booking agent we've also pretty much secured 9 weeks of touring through central and western Queensland in a couple of months.
