Ive owned 3 so far and they all have had volume drop issues.....even with brand new tubes....

I know about the effects loop issue, CLEANED.....still same issue on all of them.

They all have been used though.....should i just buy the next one brand new?

Too right! Its really a shame because its hit and miss. I can reamp for hours with no problems then I plug in a guitar for a bit of a blast and it starts making weird noises. Wish I had the money for a 5150 III haha

i thought i had some major problems with my 5150 II, it made loud pops and cracks and sound dropping out or very low volume, i ended up tearing it apart it actually ended up being a loose contact pin in the fx loop return jack repaired with some pliers that i bent the pin back to make solid contact again.

never had problems since and im running some old tubes and did i bias mod to it as well. so who knows, what seemed like a major problem turned out to be a small minor problem.

5150's are getting old in terms of amp years. It's starting to hit the age where problems like this will be popping up all over the place. If I had a 5150 on my bench, I'd start by hard wiring everything instead of using the connectors. I'd also look to start replacing all the electrolytic capacitors, because from what I've seen they are starting to go bad on the older Peaveys(this is a normal thing when electrolytics start aging, it's not the manufactures fault.)

I'd take it somewhere and have some work done to it. Get it up to snuff.

Mine is from '92, I'm the second owner, and it has no issues.

My only amp that's ever had a problem is my Engl Savage (which I'm trying to sort out now; it's making me very sad).

yep, had the same issues.
got it fixed by an amp tech and it's running smoothly ever since (actually it sounds better as he also bias modded the damn thing - no more nasty crossover distortion, yeah), but i have no idea what exactly caused the problem. i guess it was a combination of a preamp tube going down and some of the usual fx chain stuff.

My experiences have always been pleasent. Even though you cleaned the loop jacks, that is only a temp fix. I had my jacks replaced and never had a problem afterwards.

Wolfeman, you really think the caps are going quick on these? I hear about blues guys replacing the caps in their vintage Fenders, since they recommend changing em every 40 years or so, hahaha.

Yeah, I've had ( and still do) crappy experiences with 5150's
I've had 3 all over the years and all of them ( the last one 2 weeks ago, still being serviced) broke in the same way. Noise buildup, you put the amp on standby because of fear and then the amp blows the fuse, you change it, it makes a really big spark on the 4th power tube and it's blown up.
I love the sound but it's unreliable in my experience.

I wish I could go buy another amp that wasn't giving me those chills whenever something weird comes out of the guitar cab, but when I bought it, it was the only thing I could reach in terms of budget, this last time was because I love the sound and boom again :(

I keep telling myself "you should have bought the engl/laboga/krank instead" quite often

P.S. I'm using it for band practice/rehearshal duties, running from a furman pl8 so the power doesn't have spikes, or it shouldn't

im on my 3rd NEW 6505, well its repaired as it nacked up once before, before that the other one crapped out, this has now had a full warranty service from Peavey and has new JJs in the power section, so far, touch wood, this thing has been fine for both studio and live!!
