Power/progressive metal band from Japan. They're one of the most popular bands of all time in Japan, oddly enough.

Their music kicks ass, and I love their singing, but a lot of people hate the vocals.

idk.

Any opinions?

Pretty awesome band. I listened to them when I was first getting into metal. I still like them, they just don't fit into my listening patterns these days.

don't think I'd call them power metal, but yes they kick lots of ass. Don't listen to them as much as I used to, but Art of Life is always a great song to listen to when you're depressed.

I guess there already is a topic about them somewhere here, I remember I wrote in it this summer... whatever. I like this band quite much and yes, their music really kicks ass. I have one normal best-of and a ballads best-of, I like them both and I think that they were great in writing fast songs and ballads alike.

I wouldn't call their music "power metal" either, though I can't think of another way to label their music
People use to call it Japanese Rock, but probably it can be labelled in a more general way.
By the way, a friend of mine has recently suggested me some Japanese bands which play the same stuff, I took a listen to them and they really deserve a listen, indeed. I'm going to post their names soon.

I dunno much about what defines Power Metal as power metal, but most power metal has a very triumphant feel to it, like "I just slew a dragon" type stuff. X Japan songs usually feel very angry or sad, they portray a lot of very real and human emotions that you just don't see in power metal (unless you really did just slay a dragon). I've always heard them described as speed metal, but not sure what I'd call them.
