Anyone ever did this for quiet direct recording?

I'm exchanging my Line 6 HD147 head for a VHT Deliverance.

Unfortunately this means I can't record direct in as easily.

I've considered getting a THD Hotplate, and using the Line Out from that. However I am still missing speaker/cab simulation. What could I do from there?

Thanks

Impulses baby! All you need is some kind of convolution plugin (I use SiR, which is a free VST) and a cab impulse .wav, and you're good to go (search for "impulse")

Actually SIR is no longer free. I was at a friends studio and wanted to introduce him to the wonderful world of impulse responses, so we tried to download SIR, and it now costs $189. Check it out: http://www.knufinke.de/sir/purchase.html
Not a bad price, but free is better. There must be another freeware convolution plugin for Windows, but I don't know of it. On the mac side where I reside there is LA convolver http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32033. Absolutely free and works perfectly.
If I were using a pc and it turned out that the cheapest was SIR at $189, I would just buy revalver mkII. Same price range, can load impulses, plus you'd get all the amp sims with it.

actually SIR v1 is still free and there are a few more free ones for the pc. search KVR's plugin database to find them

My bad. I didn't know SIR v1 was even still available. I guess I didn't look too hard since it wasn't for me.:loco:

Hey GuitarGod I see from your sig that you're a Cubase user... Unfortunately there is no VST version of LA Convolver (AU only). I wish someone (fxpansion) would develop more wrappers for different plugin formats such as the VST to RTAS adapter. An AU to RTAS wrapper would be great for me since I do most of my work at home in Logic, but sometimes end up finishing a project elsewhere in Pro Tools. The added flexibilty of not having to bounce tracks with plugins would be awesome. I like LA convolver so much for its ease of use and relatively low CPU hit that I find myself using it over Space Designer.

GarageBand may not be as "gay" as you think; If you dig a little deeper than all the corny prepackaged loops you can actually do a lot with this app. And if you ever get Logic, all of your GarageBand projects can be opened in Logic with zero modification, bouncing, etc. Think of GB as sort of a sketchpad for Logic. But yeah, at the end of the day GB is not a "pro" application.

I found a free convolution reverb recently for mac and it worked for me with Cubase, its called sonicbirth, theres a load of stuff in it but I dont know how good it is as I've never played around with it much, just loaded up an impulse and it worked. Heres the Link:
