I was thinking about moving there in the next 5 years. Tired of freakin Jersey!!! :yell: If your from there what's it like and what are the good parts and bad parts? Indianapolis is it good to live there? Thanks!

I am from Gary Indiana, wich is about 25mins from Down Town Chicago ILL. Gary Indiana is not a good city due to the High Murder rate. But alot of the Smaller City/Towns around here are real nice, Munster, Dyer,Hobart, Crown Point, Scherrillvile, Valpo are all decent to real nice places. The good thing about living here is about anything you need/ want is with in 20 mins of you. Almost any thing you can think of is within reach, 100's of places to eat, lots and lots of shoping places. Indy is ok, But like NW Indiana best due to how close Chicago is. If I was to move to Indiana, This area is where I would want to be.

I grew up in NW Indiana. I lived in Dyer, Schererville, and Munster and they are all pretty nice. Its great because they are all nice clean towns and the schools systems are really good. I agree with Buddy that there are plenty of things to do (restaurants, shopping, etc). Plus, the 40 minute drive to Chicago isnt that bad to check out shows or sporting events.

40 mins to Chicago?!?, How where you getting there?, By unicycle? lol, Just messin with you.

And like I said its Just Gary that is a bad area, all other Citys stated are real nice with good School's.

Thanks for the info. I did some research and Iowa is a low crime state. I got kids so I want a nice place for them to grow up.

I'm from Ames, Iowa, which is a college town and is nice. The crime is low pretty much throughout the whole state. The education system is really good here. There's not much here to do when compared to a city, so that might be a bit of a culture shock from you coming from Jersey. It's a slower pace kind of life here, lots of open area (farms), but I like that. I'm assuming you're from the city. Des Moines isn't bad, pop. about 250,000 and I suppose the metro area is about 500,000. It's about 3 hours from Kansas City, 3 hours from Minneapolis, and 2 hours from Omaha. So its not too far from some bigger metro areas. They're finishing up a big new events center/arena, so hopefully Des Moines will get some more concerts there and maybe even a minor league hockey team.

If you've got any other questions, let me know-My wife is a social worker and would have some info regarding raising kids, and I've got friends in a few diff. areas of the state, so I could possibly get info from them too.

buddy, you must be jumping on the skyway or something to get there in 20 minutes. from schererville by the time i either jump on 394 or drive through munster to get on the 80/94 at calumet avenue and get up to the loop it takes about 40 minutes. my dad used to own a pharmacy in gary on the corner of broadway and ridge road. it was bad but i know it wasnt the worst part of gary. i hope you are in a better area. i also here horror stories from a friend of mine who is a gary cop. not too nice.

Don't move to Indianapolis, if you are interested in seeing shows, best bet is like Buddy said or Ft. Wayne..........in 3 years I am moving to either OH (coz EVERY fucking band goes there) or FL (coz no snow)

Thank you very much. Well I used to live in Brooklyn NY but then my parents moved to Jersey. Its the suburbs of Jersey so there is alot of country type areas. But its starting to get bad with all these cities around here. We have Trenton, Camden, Philly, Jersey city and NY all in a two hour max drive. If I was single and no kids its cool but I got start thinking about them plus I just sick of Jersey and need a change. Also you guys may think I'm crazy but I was watching the discovery channel and it was about meteors. And most likley they said it will hit the ocean and cause a huge tital wave and most of the coasts will be underwater! That is another reason I want to move inland. I can't even swim!!!

Kinda cool, my mother is a Gary cop as well, and I know the stor you are talkin about. My mother used to always get her smokes from there, and yes the skyway is the way i go most of the time, but traffic is bad there now.

P.S. whats your dads cop friends name? Around this time next year, I to should be a Gary Police officer.

Here's a hint: Avoid the land of the Hoosiers. Move to Illinois.
Are you fucking nuts? Illinois blows. And I'm not talking from a things to do perspective, but the governments are killing us all. Uncle Rod can lick my sack. He's trying to put me out of a job with his tax hikes. Fuck this state. Once our parents bite the dust, we are OUT OF HERE.

My advice to you is : Keep your choice to move to Indiana. I lived there for 9 years from 1975-1984 and it was great. I'll probably move back there again someday.

I camp at Barton Lake. Thought about moving to Angola once upon a time too...But it never came to be, alas....

buddy, the name of the store was broad-ridge pharmacy if you remember that. i havent been by there in years but i think it is still some sort of pharmacy. my brother and i want to stop on in sometime just to see how the place looks. we spent quite a few summers and saturdays working there and it was a cool place. the gary cop that we know that used to work at my dads place is officer mark salazar. im sure your mom knows him.

I've lived in Indiana all of my life. I moved to Arizona for a while and I hated it. I live between Indy and Cincy, so I have pretty good options for shows. It's not bad, there will always be a downside to anwhere you move. But after living in Arizona, I realized how much I like Indiana.

You might want to check out Madison, Wisconsin. We're only a couple hours from Chicago (depending on where you are going and how bad traffic is), 75-90 min. from Milwaukee (home of the Metalfest). Plus, Madison is a college town, 200,000+ people. Bands don't come through here as much as they hit Milwaukee or Chicago, but Anthrax was here in August, Metallica is coming to town, Disturbed was here last year... Pretty low crime rates, good school systems, and the most restaurants per capita in the U.S.

I went to the Madison Visitor's Bureau and here are some of their most recent rankings:
