I have a pair of Yamaha HS7s and I am thinking about getting a subwoofer. I play 8 string guitar(and beyond) and also make soundtrack music and electronic music. Would you guys suggest getting one?
I can't speak to personal experience in regards to using a sub while mixing but most of what I've read from reliable sources suggest making sure your room is really well treated and large enough before going down that path. I doubt you NEED a sub to do rock music regardless of how low your tuning but I would think its borderline necessary for electronic and soundtrack work.
there´s good use for subs in every genre. imagine you mixed a song on smaller monitors, and end up with insane low-end you never noticed, or worse: not enough. happens regularly, just take a listen to any forum´s mixbox.
I've heard of guys who swear by subs, and guys who hate them. Once you learn your monitors really well you should be able to mix about anything on them. I always just reference my stuff through quality headphones to check the low end a bit before I finalize things. I've never been into subs because I think too many people use them to make their monitors sound "pleasing" as opposed to really dialing them in for proper mixing.
I reference my low end thru a boom box and compare back and forth with mixes that I like. Agree with knowing your monitors well and also checking mixes thru quality headphones, iPhone headphones and car. Sometimes subs give the impression that your low end sits nice, when it really is lacking.
