British actor Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame has been given a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth in the New Year's honours list.
The 69-year-old Shakespearean actor, a mainstay of the British theatre for decades, won worldwide fame playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Stewart later appeared as the wheelchair-bound Professor Charles Xavier in the blockbuster X-Men movies.
He is one of scores of sportsmen and women, entertainers and business executives named in the honours list, together with many teachers, healthcare workers and others recognised for their community work.
Newly crowned Formula One world champion Jenson Button has been awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) under Britain's ancient and complex system of honorary titles.
Button's former team boss Ross Brawn was given the higher-ranked award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Also honoured with OBEs were veteran rock musicians Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi, who founded rock band Status Quo in the 1960s and notched up 22 British top-10 singles.
Notable mostly for their absence from this year's honours list were bankers, whose prestige has been badly tarnished by the financial crisis that brought several British banks to their knees.
An exception was Dyfrig John, former head of HSBC's UK banking, who was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Also missing were members of parliament, many of whom shocked British voters by making exorbitant expense claims.
