I read some good stuff about it and there are some on the used market for around 250€. Is it worth it or is there some better units in the same price range?

These were pretty popular a few years ago, though I remember reading some stuff about them being a bit noisy (may have been a stock tubes thing)
I think these days people are leaning more towards the GAP/Warm Audio pre's, or going down the do it yourself API route.

I had one a few years back. A nice unit but as was already said they are fairly noisy but do add a nice warmth and can add the required gain for something like an SMB7.

I don't think I'd buy one again. I've switched to mentality of ultimate clarity and then processing it in the box to warm it up which worked better for me. They are nice on certain vocal styles though. If you have a high gain mic and do a lot of vocals I still think it's an OK unit but it's not really magical. And yes, I even upgraded the tubes in mine...not all that much of a difference IMO.

Thanks. Well, I think I'll save some more money then. I have a GAP pre73, great stuff indeed! Warm Audio pres look nice too, I've never listened anything from them tho (say a shootout or something). Otherwise I thought about FMR RNP but althought they're great they're also transparent and I'd like to get something a bit colored.

I considered getting that unit but ultimately opted for the MPA II Reference Series with 7025s, which are designed to be more quiet. As for the digital version, I'd be more concerned about the quality of the converters in the unit than the tubes.
