Budget Preamp Test:Art Pro MPA II, 002, Motu 8pre

Well after the other thread i decided to do my own test with what i have.

Its with a remaped track with no changes to anything apart from mic Pres.

Ive normalised the files to peak no higher than -2dB

First snippet is the Art Pro MPA II with mullard reissue tubes in, i haven't pushed the valve stage on this so it had alot of head room,

Second clip is the Art Pro MPA II again, this time with more input gain pushing the tubes.

Third clip is the 002

and the fourth is the Motu 8 Pre

way more subtle differences on this one imho.

upon first listen...
...002 still has the flubby lows and weird highs. rank 4 for me.
...both ART clips sound quite similar to me...second one does sound more pushed, but that doesn't really seem to add a desireable character.
...motu seems to be the most focused one here. again quite similar to the ART stuff, but less harsh highs and a bit more definition. my first choice here.

need to double check on the adams though. only listened on dt770 cans

I don't seem to hear a big difference either apart from the 002 being less tight than the others.

BTW, I aligned the tracks and reversed the first one's phase. The 2 art tracks are obviously most close and the 002 leaves a lot of low end.

is that the 002 has more lows naturally then? interesting to do that! i forgot to actually listen to the difference between em doing this!
