yea like a preformed 'twin' that was more underdeveloped than the other in utero fetus so it was still undifferentiated from a reptile.
 
that's only if you believe that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny. While that is mostly accurate, parts of it are untrue at least becoming difficult to rationalize.
