whats your budget? ive heard great things about the apogee duet. guitar rig sounds awesome for a vst or you could try a line 6 pod pedal. good luck

Maybe try open-source. Try looking up apps such as Rakarrack and run them on Musix. http://www.musix.org.ar/en/

a good starting point is a line 6 toneport bundled with gearbox or podfarm
as for free vst's for your DAW etc there are lots for windows, not many for mac

MOTU MOTU MOTU, if you want a good converter and need ins and outs this will be the middle of the road its better than m audio, presonus, and focusrite, but not quite as good a RME, lynx, apogee
