For me, it's all about the melody when it comes to music. I tend to like metal best because I think metal(especially the European kind that's evolved since 2000) has the best melodies by far of any musical genre.
I'm not even sure this is a metal song, but damn can Tobias write some awesome melodies. I like my music with prechoruses and bridges and all that added complexity as well, and I'm sure we'll get that on the album. But for singles you want simplicity, so that's why we get verse/chorus here.
As for his singing, he's singing the way most modern pop/rock singers do. He's not stretching his voice and doing the young Bruce Dickinson thing like he's always done before. He's singing like Tobias Sammet would sing if he hadn't grown up on Iron Maiden and Helloween. And it's the perfect style for that song.
However, there's no denying his voice isn't as strong as it used to be. Whether he's been abusing his voice with a hard lifestyle or he's just dropping an octave due to age like most metal singers when they near 30, who knows? Hopefully he's taking good care of that voice because it's a treasure.
