The Panchen Lama is the same highest ranking lama compare Dalai Lama in the Geluk sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the sect which historically controlled Tibet. He bears part of the responsibility for finding the incarnation of the Dalai Lama and vice versa. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, named Gedhun Choekyi Nyima the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama on May 14, 1995 but no the Vase lot confirmed. However, the government of the People's Republic of China has named another child, Gyancain Norbu and got the Vase lot confirmed, as such and the Dalai Lama-named Panchen Lama has gone "missing".

it's fucked up, the Dalai Lama named one kid the new Panchen Lama, and the kid and his whole family immediately vanished and were never heard from again (the Chinese took and killed them). so the current Panchen Lama is pretty much a fake, and the Chinese have been trying to get Renji, the daughter of the last real Panchen Lama, to "confirm" that their Lama is "real". and they're pissed/afraid of Renji because Tibetans follow her around and touch her and weep over her the way they usually do over lamas, but they don't do shit to the fake Chinese-backed lama.
