Not sure if that trend was very common, but I saw an odd story/documentary a few years ago about some fagy japanese rock band and their following, where they interviewed a group of ~fifteen year old girls dressed in full black SS uniforms with the swastika armband and what not, which in itself was was quite bizarre. But then the reporter asks one of the girls why they're wearing those uniforms, the girl replies with something along the lines of "XX (the signer of the band they adored) likes when the fans wear them". OK, so that's pretty stupid but then he points to the white-red armband of hers and asks if she knows what it means; she looks a bit confused and then says "Ehm, I think it's the logo of some rock band *japanese schoolgirl giggle*"
