'Simpsons' could soon come to an end

LONDON - Cowabunga, dude! Could the end be near for cult television cartoon family ''The Simpsons?''

''I think we are closer to winding it up,'' the television show's creator, Matt Groening, told the Financial Times in an interview published Tuesday.

''Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground,'' he said.

Groening has earned millions for media baron Rupert Murdoch's Fox channel since the series featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first entered the lives of television viewers in 1989.

Its appeal has spread far beyond its American setting and its dysfunctional characters have become globally recognized symbols of mid-life crisis and childhood rebellion.

TV Guide recently placed the animated show eighth on its list of the 50 greatest television shows of all time.

Its power to attract audiences is such that in February Britain's Channel 4 was said to have paid up to $1 million an episode to show the series, outbidding the BBC, which had been broadcasting it for the past six years.

And it retains its ability to cause upset. When a recent episode depicted Rio de Janeiro as teeming with rats, monkeys and street crime, Brazilian tourist officials were outraged and the show's executive producer was forced to apologize.

But Groening admitted to weariness with the formula of the show, now in its 13th series.

''It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but surprising ourselves,'' he said.

However, he said he doubted his creative angst would overly concern the television accountants.

''I think Fox will wring every last penny out of the show before they call it a day.''

Sorry, but The Simpsons have sucked ass for years now!! They are nowhere near as funny as they use to be.

Family Guys kicks the shit out of Simpsons, and it isn't getting the respect it deserves (from Fox anyway...)

New episodes (or from the last few seasons) = stupid shit.
Classic episodes (from mid 90's) = the funniest shit ever written.

And it's not just my opinion, it is an undenyable fact that newer Simpsons aren't anywhere as funny as the old ones.

and no I'm not on Crack, even though I appear to be on many occasions.

family guy is the biggest rip off I've ever seen, not only does it rip off the simpsons (blatantly) but also rips off King of the Hill, Futurama and Dilbert(Brian: a talkin dog? where has that been done before) just to name a few shows. Obviously its okay to rip off a few ideas cause it's only a cartoon, but Family guy is ridiculous.
Eg. when Peter went to the beer factory trip and it was like Charlie and the chocolate factory. That was a total ripoff of futurama (plus the duff brewery trip homer went on), they even rip off jokes in Family guy, word for word....Peter is playing blackjack and the dealer deals him his cards, he has a good hand like 20, then he goes "hit me" and he gets 21, then he goes hit me and he goes bust, then he goes "hit me" again, he might aswell have said "doh!". This series of the Simpsons has probably been its most inconsistent, its had some bad episodes but its also had some really great ones. At least they're trying to be original, everything has to come to and end though. I just hope they do some christmas specials or somethin...

Maybe the calibre of current day Simpsons doesn't match the originality of earlier episodes, but it is still one of the best (if not the best) shows in current production. It is one of the only shows that I go out of my way to try and watch each week. Reruns are infinately rewatchable (which is good, because in syndication they are infinately replayed), but I do hope that they go out while they are still strong instead of fizzling out.

It's like Seinfeld...it could have easily gone on for many more years, and I would have loved that, but at the same time it went out on top, still fresh and funny and not leaving a sour taste of "it's about time".

I love the Simpsons, it is always great, that last episode where Homer turns into the Incredible Hulk:lol: Man that was great. The Family Guy is great too, I don't care if it is a rip off, those other shows don't make me laugh as much, I don't think I ever laughed so much in my life the last time I watched the show, good shit.

I'm going to miss the simpsons:cry:

I was just on the Drudge report and it had a link to something where Matt Groening said the Simpsons were not even close to ending or something like that. I didnt read it because I am not a fan. But you all might want to check it out.
