Esqarial - "Everlasting Wanderers" - This Polish prog-death band is absolutely incredible. Picture fusing Vader with Steve Vai and Dream Theater without a single annoying moment, and wham, Esqarial is born. This track is from their PERFECT "Inheritance" CD and I can't recommend it enough. The guitar work ALONE is enough reason to buy this band's entire discography.
Ablaze My Sorrow - "Suicidal" - This is one of those bands that went from OK to AMAZING in a single release. Swedish melodic death metal masters in a crowd of many. What sets this band apart is that they blend completely heavy Swedish melodic parts with... catchy choruses, without being even the SLIGHTEST bit cheesy. All the songs are arguably too short, but they come in, kick your ass, and finish. This particular track is quite intense, and each riff is better than the next. It's from the CD "Anger Hate and Fury" and it's another MUST-HAVE.
Quo Vadis - "On The Shores Of Ithaka" - Talk about a RIFF FEST!! Quebec's finest technical death metal band whose focus is clearly on riffs. Their drummer is inhuman, the guitar players are tremendous, everything about this "Day Into Night" release is incredible. It's absolutely must-have. This band makes Cryptopsy sound stupid. Very stupid.
Source - "Awake" - Another great great great Swedish DM band. Great riffs, nothing's overdone. This is from their ESSENTIAL "Left Alone" debut. Get this too.
Kalmah - "Doubtful About It All" - Finland produces two things for the most part. The first being very beautiful very psychotic chicks. But more importantly, secondly, AMAZING BANDS! (except for Sentenced - wow they're gay). This band has been called Children of Bodom clones. I want to kick the ass of the fool who strapped this label onto this band. Their latest CD "Swampsong" is an absolute MASTERPIECE. This song is a great indication of just how well the Finns do the "Swedish Melodic" thing. Maybe better than the Swedes, even? This band got 10x better with a single release.
Mors Principium Est - "Life In Black" - Another AMAZING Finnish melodic band that came well, from out of NOWHERE. Their debut release "Inhumanity" is great start to finish. Great tracks and great musicianship. Get it. GET IT! Fate Turns Grey - "My Immortal Beloveth" - This Swe...what? CALIFORNIAN? Yep, that's right. THIS CALIFORNIAN melodic DM band absolutely kicked my ass. I was like greeeeeeeeeat, another US thugcore band wishing they were metal. NO SIR. This band means business. Their 4-song EP is ESSENTIAL and this track is GREAT. Very skilled band, and very Euro sounding. Most (near-all) US melodic downright sucks. These guys are KINGS. I cannot WAIT for a full-length!
garden of shadows- dissolusion of the form. great melodic doom/death metal band from maryland of all places. heavier than m.d.b., and a doom band without an annoying singer.
