i am a guitarist looking to pick up a bass guitar in a few months. i'll be aiming for a geezer butler/cliff burton approach to the instrument; finger picking, distorted tone, and of course solos. any brands and models you'd suggest? i am not looking to drop a ton of cash, but i would want something a little better than entry level.

Don´t want to expend a lot of cash and want good stuff? Get the ESP F-205. Sounds good, looks good, plays good. I wish I had one =P

Depens on what you want to spend on it... Guess the ESP would be a great choice. I play Washburn RB2600, they have good 5 stringers too. Maybe you'd want to start on a 4 stringer...
I'd say just play some basses in a store and see what you like about the different basses. Then summarize and find the bass that has al those things
