I think the best source for a cover song is to introduce your audience to a band or song that they otherwise may not be familiar with.

Hate Metallica all you want, but how many of us honestly were into Diamond Head, Budgie, or Blitzkrieg before Garage Days first came out?
They had the right idea.

Honorable mention to Kreator for covering Tygers of Pan Tang's Gangland.

What HammerFall does is an abomination in covering well known songs consistently, but not even adding their own flair to em.
 
Most bands that do cover songs only show how damn terrible they are at writing their own songs.

Yes, yes and yes! Agree completely. Covers just simply only work if bands add something new to the song. Bands that just play it straight...I just don't understand the point in that. The only time I sort of can is if it's like you said and they're trying to introduce their fans into someone else.
