I've heard pretty solid votes for each. I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death, but I'd really like to hear your opinions. I'd really like to get into programing drums and was wondering which gets your vote? The Steven Slate stuff is super tempting because it absolutely killer an also comes with the Gog files as well, but I've heard a few people say they favor Superior 2.0. Your thoughts?

Both are valuable tools, but SD2 could be considered more flexible, what with having dry samples and all.

I use both in tandem, and the results are sick.

SD2 is better for creating tracks from scratch up, Slate is better for replacement.

I use them both in tandem, as well, but survived for a while with just the SD2.0 stuff. I couldn't by any means use Slates kits alone, though.

Using them in tandem is best. Superior 2 is better for creating more realistic drum tracks from the ground up, with a ton of flexibility regarding drums, room mics etc. Slate is basically just a bunch of radio-ready drum sounds you can slip into your mix to finalize the product. Both have their place, but if you are sequencing drums from scratch you might consider using SD2.0 as your base, and then blending some Slate drum hits with the kick, snare, or toms.

The thing I can't get around with the Slate samples is that they already have 'that sound', which you can't really process out of them. SD2.0 is a bit more raw, so you get more flexibility in regards to how you want to shape your drums. This is why Slate samples make fantastic blend tools, and the SD2.0 drums make good bases.

+1

S2 is very flexible. SSD sounds awesome out of the box.

Superior Drummer is a fantastic program and a great tool. SSD is also a great tool and has many different features, mainly in the way the audio is preprocessed, and the number of drumkits... I'd do a search in this forum since like you said, its been beaten to death.. this same thread was started within a month ago.

There are thousands of SSD users who use SSD 100% from the ground up and in another thread I posted some demos... ah hell here are a few:

www.stevenslatedrums.com/demo2/ssdmetal.mp3

www.stevenslatedrums.com/easy/dream.mp3

www.stevenslatedrums.com/easy/def.mp3

you can hear more 100% SSD creations at the site or by searching the mp3 forum.. In my opinion, get both.

I like the idea someone mentioned of using the same Midi File with both programs.. Can someone make a simple stereo guitar, bass, and midi drum track file? Lets do some A/Bing.. I'll do the mix through a number of SSD kits and this thread will become way more valueable.

can you host the files somewhere? this sounds fun. It'll also be a great way for me to test my 3.5 beta kits. I'm downloading the mp3 now.

dcdanman, this is a great track.. however, can you print another version without all the extra reverb on the drums? It'll be an easier test of the drum sounds that way.. And yes you can just zip a Cubase folder with audio and project file, we have Cubase here.

And the track you posted is 100% Superior 2, correct? Please list the kit and any more info as well.

Yeah it would be really nice to hear a comparison between Superior drummer and ssd.

I used to use superior drummer, but I bought SSD 3 and now I only use SSD. I like the fact that it takes minimum tweaking to fit my songs. But sometimes I want to use rawer samples so I use superior drummer. So yeah, I think the best is a combination of both. I think s2.0 costs more than ssd though.

By the way, on my myspace, Athena will sing is all SSD 3.0. I, Emperor is s2.0 except kick is slate and snare is half s.20 half slate. Other songs are all Slate.

Opeth the Hands of Despair stuff is wicked! Really great mixing, guitars, drum programming.. and the drums sound killer. I'd love to use some of that stuff on my site... There are a few guys on here who have trouble with the SSD3 cymbals which I don't understand... they certainly sound fantastic on your mixes.

The S2.0 vs SSD will be very fair, because whoever does the S2.0 mixes should tweak and process the sounds in the mix... Thats the idea with Superior, it lets the mixer tweak it.. So lets do it.

Back to Hands of Despair myspace... great fucking tunes man!

In that case, I thought we already did that with Shane (Kazrog)'s song Arrival?

Shane's SSD3: http://backmask.com/downloads/audio/Arrival.mp3

Shane's S2.0: http://backmask.com/downloads/audio/Arrival (Superior 2.0 Drums).mp3

Mine: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/392637/ArrivalS20a.mp3 (S2.0 Avatar, stock snare + toms, kick = Sneaps)

P.S. Clear your PM's - I can't respond to the one you sent me .

This sounds awesome, definitely the best. Any clue as to where I can find that kick sample? This is Nir Z Snare, Correct?

It's the one Sneap posted a bit back...

Snare is actually the Black Beauty - haven't played with the Nir Z enough yet! I've not even had time to play with NY expansions I got at the beginning of summer, let alone the Metal Foundry I picked up last month. Way too swamped with other work to really dig in and work with the rest of the kits!

I went through all the snares quickly, adding a little comp and realized the Nir Z was the most pleasing to my ears. The Black Beauty is a classic without a doubt as well. I know how you feel about the swamped with work thing too. I'm recording five bands as we speak, all of which are too demanding and one of which is understanding. I'm goin back to school as of the last day in August so all this shit has to be done! Where are you going to school, Jeff?

Yeah, I just kind of sampled through when I was making my "go-to" kit and had the room mics cranked and was like THE FUCKING ROOM ON THAT SNARE I WANT In MY PANTS so I stuck with the BB haha.

I'm going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, although it's a big school, I've not really heard of anyone outside of CA knowing much about it . You?? I move in on Sept 10th, classes start Sept 22nd. I'm hoping that since my earliest class is at 11am and I don't have any classes on Fridays, that I'll have a solid amount of time to play with more sounds. I need to give Metal Foundry a good run down!!
