It's a shame, but he was on a hiding to nothing with the Queensland media and public who blamed him for everything that's ever gone wrong. He's a legend, but he had nothing to gain from staying on. Unfortunately the water and health and energy debacles will overshadow all the good he did.

A few years ago I had him down to be a future federal Labor leader, but he's said he no longer has any interest in federal politics.
