Because 8 is NOT enough...

I like the idea of having 3 bass strings below the normal guitar strings. However, 8 strings is enough for me. And it's enough for Charlie Hunter too, and he's using the same "bass and guitar combined" idea. I've been thinking about trying EADADGBE on my 8 for some time, but I need to get it fixed first.

What I would like to try though is a 10-string classical, such as the one Yepes is known for.

Screw that. I've had a 29 fret guitar since '88!

Does it intonates well in the way-high notes/frets? I've always been curious about those kind of guitars. The thing is you got to move the pickup away from it's sweet harmonic spot to have the fretboard this long.
Cool guitar!

haha, I just had the band in the studio saying "yeah, let's get a more oldschool vibe for this riff"....."oldschool" for them was meshuggah pre 2005.
guess I've become oldschool myself

Hahaha, so your band actually ASKED for average production quality?
Sorry, I love Meshuggah, but couldn't help it:D

But yeah, 2005 is far from old school to me...times change, I'd say

Yepes version of that piece is not my favorite haha

Yeah, I posted it because of the guitar; not my favourite player either.

Actually, I just remembered that one of my previous teachers used to play a 10-string classical, but he said that it was a really difficult instrument, because there was so much unwanted resonation going on with the drone strings.

Honestly, I don't go above the 24th that much. It's very much a Spinal Tap "This goes to 11" sort of thing. Or perhaps a "Fiery Phoenix" mode. (You've got to be FUCKING OLD to get that reference!)

Anyway, yeah, it's there for those solos you just have to go hi on, and that's not very often. About the pickup placement thing: I could have got 36 frets, but I wanted two pickups! The single coil is pretty sweet on cleans, tho.

Geezus, these "9 strings are stupid, why do you need so many strings" post are just so immature and closed minded, honestly.
It's because of people not wanting to actually try anything new and have acceptance of new ideas that we will never progress and just be stuck where we are.
No one says you have to play the damn things, but I don't understand what's so hard about accepting the idea, and accepting that good music can come out of the experimentation?

I can think of two bands that have an original sound with 8 strings, then I can think of a thousand djent bands. Having more range =/= more progressive.
