Waves CLA

....and a compressor is a compressor...you can dial in to suit your sound/genre. Any compressor will work for "metal" bass IMHO

I use the ssl buss compressor sometimes for putting the distorted and clean bass tracks together too, just adds a bit of glue and punch

Your DAW might have a all arround compressor that you can use like the LA2A and the 1176. Just search for the comps on the internet to get used to its attack and release times.
