We run our vocal tracks through a MacBook on our rehearsals and gigs. Any ideas what compressor plugin would be best for this purpose? Some we've tried gives a horrible amount of feedback.

Wouldn't be the plugin causing the feedback its the setting you are using. If you set it more like a limiter with a higher (closer to 0) threshold than a usual comp on vocals. It'll have to have milder setting's than you might normally use with recorded vocals too ratio wise.
You only want to tame the peaks, sounds to me like you're bringing up the noise floor and it's causing feedback. You only really want the comp to kick in when the vocalist gets loudest.

I've used the classic comp from that kjaeraus (sp?) crowd live before and it worked great. It's free

No such thing exists. Every one is good in each one way.

Try GComp. It works fine for me.
Not sure if it works in real time thought.

What sound card do you use?
