try the waves C4 with the "pop vocal" preset and adjust the threshold, then smash it with the waves RVox.

Fuck presets. Dial in the sound separately for everything. Presets are how music becomes cookie-cutter.

I really like the Sonalksis suite as well as the Oxford and all the McDSP stuff.

If you need to go on the cheap (assuming you're buying the software, right?) get the Massey CT4 as recommended above.
