Name 20 of your favourite doom metal releases from the year 2000 and onwards, because I said so and you're bored losers.
EP's, demos and compilations count. Funeral doom metal, doom death, sludge metal, stoner doom metal, epic doom metal, drone metal, it all counts.
No order is necessary, but the extra challenge is enjoyable.

Feel free to debate the legitimacy of a choice, especially if you think it doesn't fit the genre requirement.

  1. Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend
  2. The Wizar'd - Infernal Wizardry
  3. Revelation - Release
  4. Pagan Altar - The Lords Of Hypocrisy
  5. The Gates Of Slumber - Hymns Of Blood And Thunder
  6. Realmbuilder - Fortifications Of The Pale Architect*
  7. Isole - Throne Of Void
  8. Warning - Watching From A Distance
  9. Count Raven - Mammons War
  10. Pilgrim - II: Void Worship
  11. Corman - The Corman Film School
  12. Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart
  13. Argus - Boldly Stride The Doomed*
  14. Semlah - Semlah
  15. Pentagram - Sub-Basement
  16. Magic Circle - Journey Blind
  17. Garden Of Worm - Idle Stones
  18. Pale Divine - Thunder Perfect Mind
  19. Hands Of Orlac - Hands Of Orlac
  20. Raven Black Night - Choose The Night
Here's hoping I didn't forget anything essential, I'm not at home right now so I can't look at my things.

* I suspect these may be controversial choices.

Cool. Will get on this when I get home. Are you including occult rock because it's a precursor or because of the whole occult rock heavy doom stuff that usually has a female singer like Jex Thoth or Blood Ceremony/The Devils Blood?

Mostly the latter. I had in mind stuff like Hands Of Orlac though when I added that.

Eh. Isis has nothing to do with doom at all imo. That post sludge stuff doesn't anyway. Some sludge has heavy doom presence like Grief or Bongzilla... But not post sludge, difference should be obvious.

He also offered the death doom option, but I assume it refers to bands that are more doom than death, like Mourning Beloveth, rather than the inverse, like Asphyx.

This was actually nowhere near as difficult as I initially feared. Including various styles of doom including sludge made it much more easier so once I actually sat down and put finger to keyboard most of the albums immediately sprung to mind. No way is the following list in any particular order, that'd be pretty much impossible, just a smorgasbord of albums from all over the doom/sludge spectrum from the past 16 years that have had a lasting impression. Also, 20's not enough, dammit!

Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know
Eyehategod - Confederacy of Ruined Lives/Eyehategod
Solitude Aeturnus - Alone
Saint Vitus - Lillie F-65
Skepticism - Farmakon/Alloy
Candlemass - Candlemass/King of the Gray Islands/Death Magic Doom
Mournful Congregation - The Monad of Creation/ The Book of Kings
Mourning Beloveth - A Murderous Circus/A Disease For the Ages/Formless
Count Raven - Mammons War
Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead

Crowbar - Sonic Excess In Its Purest Form/Sever the Wicked Hand
Cathedral - Endtyme/The Last Spire
Sourvein - Will to Mangle/Emerald Vulture/Black Fangs
Kilslug - Sins, Tricks and Lies
Fleshpress - III: The Art of Losing All/Pillars/Tearing Skyholes
Confessor - Unraveled
Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction/Foundations of Burdon
Runemagick - Darkness Death Doom/On Funeral Wings/Invocation of Magick
Profetus - Coronation of the Black Sun/As All Seasons Die
Grief - …and Man Will Become the Hunted

Buzzoven - Revelation: Sick Again (Recorded in '98 but not actually released until 2011)
Saturnine - Mors Vocat
haarp - The Filth/Husks
Wormphlegm - In an Excruciating Way.../Tomb of the Ancient King
Faustcoven - Rising From Below the Earth/Hellfire and Funeral Bells
Electric Sinners - Memento Mori
Adolf Satan - Adolf Satan
Witchsorrow - Witchsorrow/God Curse Us/No Light, Only Fire

2007 actually. Great record.

Kilslug - Sins, Tricks and Lies

I forgot all about this one myself.

Yeah I was definitely talking about bands that lean heavier on the doom metal side, I had Winter and Encoffination in mind specifically.

I couldn't tell you the difference between any of those genres in the poll. In addition, I don't listen to enough doom metal to make a list but I look forward to listening to some of the albums listed to raise my doom metal awareness.

Understandable as it seemed like its status was forever stuck in "coming soon" mode. It was one of my most anticipated releases for at least 5 years but the end results more than justified the waiting. Plus you really can't blame the band for wanting every little detail to be perfect seeing as it was their first album since Answer the Call.

Great calls on Sub Basement and Throne of Void too. Love both those. The former is one of Pentagram's most undervalued albums and the later is unquestionably a modern doom classic. Possibly Isole's finest work to date.

I'm also using the one band one album rule and I realize some of these may be a bit debatable as Doom.

In no particular order...

Yob - The Unreal Never Lived
Witchcraft -S/T
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Pentagram - Sub Basement
Acid Witch - Witchtanic Hellucinations
Warning- Watching from a Distance
Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down (perhaps more alt metal than doom)
Goatsnake - Flower of Disease
Place of Skulls - With Vision
Woods of Ypress - The Green Album
Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead
The Devil's Blood - The Time of no Time Evermore
Deadboy and the Elephantmen - If this is Hell then I'm Lucky ( Pretty damned Doom in my book)

Eagle Twin - The Unkindness of Crows
Boris - Heavy Rocks
Jex Thoth - s/t
Demon Lung - The Hundredth Name
Rwake -If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die
Ghost - Opus Eponymous ( Hey , it says occult rock at the top!)

He once made a big stink about someone making a doom metal top 10 or however-many-it-was list for 2011 with both 40 Watt Sun and Murkrat on it.

You think The Ritualist is better than the S/T?
