finger style can work, i think it just depends on the style.
peter iwers from in flames, steve harris, ryan from mudvayne, mastodon, dimmu borgir, angra, deftones, opeth...
if its alot of start stop/thrash i don't think fingerstyle is the way to go, but when bass is driving the melody or holding the groove as the guitars do a harmony, i think finger style works pretty well.

mudvayne is a very different style - with lots and lots of chord tapping and single string hammering where instead of plucking the note you literally hit it - a great sharp sound that require you have a great bass and a fantastic player like mudvayne do.

alex webster has a great sound, too...but then again, he's an outstanding bass player.
