Best of Progressive Metal

I'll second MAUDLIN OF THE WELL

They are the most brilliant band I have heard in a long time. They have a forum here, but do not except much info there except trivial banter.

I've been on a huge Prog Metal kick as of late. Just wondering what other ProgMetal bands people from the board love. I wouldn't mind checking out some that I haven't heard yet. My tops would probably have to be...

Rush (Prog Rock but their name MUST always be mentioned when talking about the prog genre))
Dream Theater
Pain of Salvation
Fates Warning
Symphony X
Evergrey
Ayreon
Transatlantic

Definitely check out Vanden Plas. They are the kings of German prog bands and are quite progressive, but are very "song" based in their approach to music writing. The keyboard player (Gunter Werno) is quite famous and works on many side projects. If you like harmony vocals, check out their latest CD "Beyond Daylight." To me, that CD has some of the best harmonizing vocals I have ver heard. If a heavier approach to prog is better for you, "Far Off Grace" their next latest studio release and it has more "ooomph" than "Beyond Daylight."

How 'bout:

Spastic Ink
Firemerchants
Dysrhythmia,
Actual Time
Meshuggah
Theory in Practice
Planet X
Dillinger Escape Plan

theR.A.C.E.
Enditol

Into Eternity KILL live saw them twice, once with Nevermore, SICK!!

There are really two distinct eras of true progressive music... the 70s and the 90s. The 80s was mainly neo-prog remnants from after the prog of the 70s became unpopular.

70s
Genesis
Yes
Rush
Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Gentle Giant
Camel
Gong
Egg
King Crimson

80s
Marillion
IQ
Pallas
Rush
Queensryche
Fates Warning
Watchtower

90s

Dream Theater
Fates Warning
Pain of Salvation
Spock's Beard
TransAtlantic
Planet X
Shadow Gallery
Zero Hour

early Thought Industry!!! they're so underrated

I was wondering if they'd come up. I recently heard some tracks from their Mods Carve The Pig album... very cool, fucked-up music with odd lyrics. Didn't they kind of drop the metal from their sound after a while? Usually people just suggest the first 3 or so by them.

for the prog rock fans : I suppose you are aware of the german kraut rock scene.
Bands like Amon Duul II, Can, Birth Control that reminded noone and had a really elegant and unique approach for progressive rock music.

Ya, Ive been meaning to check out Psychotic Waltz for a while now! Also, I frickin forgot about Jethro Tull.

Speaking of Psychotic Waltz and Jethro Tull, I checked out PW for the first time recently and the very first song I heard had some heavy JT influences. The song was "I Remember" off of "A Social Grace". It is a great song. In fact, I've been impressed with everything I've heard from PW so far. Now we'll have to see how difficult their albums are to find...

not difficult if you search on ebay.
In the booklet of A Social Grace in the beginning of"I Remember" the singer/flute player of the band Buddy Lackey writed a dedication "Dedicated to Ian Anderson , my teacher"

Oh! I COMPLETELY fogot about Thought Industry! They rule! Started out as a very off-the-wall, avant-garde, slightly thrash-tinged prog. metal, and as time went by, they become more and more like a cross between Dream Theater and Rush. They kick ass.

In this order:
1. Dream Theater (the gods of prog metal/rock)
2. Opeth (they're not No.1 as they cant be classified as purely prog metal)
3. Tool
4. Spock's Beard
5. Enchant

Vanden Plas ? No way
there are many many better German prog bands
Soul Cages, Jester's March , Mekong Delta, Secrecy, Depressive Age , House Of Spirits, and many more

Well there is certainly a "to each his own" to this, but I think Vanden Plas has consistantly put out top progressive CDs for about five years. To some Vanden Plas is a bit like "prog-light" but I think they write great songs, have great emotion in their music, play interesting stuff and on Beyond Daylight in particular absolutely smoke the competition on the harmony vocals.
