Well, it is actually possible to "learn music" completely regardless of the genre by studying music theory. It's basically just math in the form of music, but it can be applied to all types of music. Besides, knowing music theory will make your life as a musician or music student about 10 million times easier. Being able to read / write music is a very valuable skill.
