Bill Bailey

Ricky Gervais is a one-trick pony. Comparing him to the extreme talents of people like Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran is just stupid. Whether you find them funny or not, they clearly are more gifted than he is.

Unless one actually lives in the UK, the chances of you understanding the humour that comes from Brit comedians is extremely low. Im guessing you're American? If you are from the UK, then i would assume its a generational thing, everyone in my age group finds Coogan hilarious for the most part (sans Saxondale). He is a fine comedic actor of modern times.

I was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne and now I live in Leeds.

I think Ricky Gervais' humour is dated and he tries too hard.
I think Steve Coogan is just not fucking funny in the slightest, his jokes make sense.. but they just arent funny at all, he needs to piss off basically.

PS. Blackadder (II,III,Goes Forth) is by far the funniest thing to come out of British comedy. THAT is comic genius, and everything else mentioned in this thread should bow down to its awesomeness.

PPS. Generational? I don't think so. There's loads of people in my age group who find Coogan funny and loads of people who don't. Those who do are generally the waste of DNA type who listen to shit music and buy their clothes at Topman.

again agreed - it is genius....but is it better than python??? I wouldn't like to make that call. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were also outrageous in their time.

My other Brit favourites of modern times:

Brass Eye (i think on par with Black Adder, but not sitcom so diff to compare)
The Day Today (which is where Partridge made his first appearance)
Borat (from the Ali-G show)
Green Wing
Spaced
Red Dwarf (series 1-6 only)
Peep Show
The Fast Show (Whitehouse and Higson are geniuses)
League Of Gentlemen (funny while still maintaining that sinister feel)

I think the most overrated of all has to be Little Britain. It copied the format of the fast show and even some of the ideas from League of Gents. I'd say 30% of the sketches are amusing at best.

thats the whole point of ricky gervais act, its supposed to be desperate for a reaction from people thats what makes it so teeth grinding. Anyone like Peep Show while where here?

LOVE Peep Show. Mitchel is hilarious. I have their radio performance cd's.

The problem with Little Britain is that every set of characters keeps following the same path over and over again. Basically they just rehash their own material over and over for every episode. Individually I think they have done some really funny stuff. But once you watch more episodes it doesn't hold up because it all becomes extremely predictable.

As for Ricky Gervais, I think The Office was a brilliant show. Very refreshing. But that is all he can do. Extras has been extremely disappointing and most of his other TV appearances are the same. He isn't an actor, he isn't even really very funny. The role of David Brent fit him perfectly because that *is* him to some extent. But that also means he is limited to just that. His character in Extras is a slightly less arrogant David Brent. For the rest it's the same kind of humor and mannerisms except based on much less well written material and without the originality that The Office had.

So... David Brent, funny. Ricky Gervais... not so much.

I agree 100%.

Peep show and Black Books are definitely the two most refreshing comedies out in recent years. Dylan Moran writes most of Black Books so he should get more credit, as well as his character being generally better than Bailey.

Ross Noble is wonderful - he isn't as funny as Bill Bailey, but I can respect him more because none of his stand up is written beforehand, it's all improvised.
