Bit of a dumb question

I got a Radial JDI today and it sounds great but IIRC I read that using longer cables can degrade the signal because it's a passive box, something to do with the transformer possibly. I can't remember where I saw that but what's the story? Can anyone shed any light?

I figured if it's a balanced XLR it wouldn't make any difference.
