Black Sabbath was famous for beginning certain songs with peaceful melodies before banging out the crunching riff and sometimes they disguised these little mellow melodies as short songs before head-banging track begun. Example would be Orchid/Lord of This World or Don't Start To Late/Symptom of the Universe.

Opeth does well to hold the mantle of Black Sabbath's forte.

Madrigal ~ melodic mysterious interlude, beautifully written and played leading into the first of 3 riff changes (just when you think you have Opeth pegged!).

Riff one ~ cool, gets the blood going. DUM-DUM...da-da-DUM. (throw in a little acoustics...)

Riff two ~ then the change with the "ooooooohhhhhh" throw in the little mix, back to the riff...but then, right then....

BANG YOUR FUCKING HEADS!!!

Riff three ~ The drums, the riff, the beat....

"WHITE SUMMER!!!! So far I have gone to see you again."

MAYH fucking rocks. Their absolute best!

Hey good observation. Also...Children of the Sea does that, only without the pre-song bit. Which I suppose was your whole point. In conclusion: *shrugs*.
