Who was the first drummer to use a blastbeat? A friend of mine said it was Dave Lombardo, but he didn't use them until Reign In Blood (I think), which was in 1986. I'm sure they were used before then.

could someone please clear up something for me and tell me what a blast beat is?

Blast Beat = When the snare is hit at a super high speed and usually the bass drums hit on every 2nd or 4th beat of the snare hits.
Death metal is notorious for this...

I think Pete Sandoval was the earliest recorded blastbeat... or maybe Mick from Napalm Death? I dunno.. one of those two guys... Pete went on to perfect it tho- IMO.....

Pretty sure it was an obscure early grindcore band from the early 80's. (not counting any prior jazz usage) I forgot their name though, heh.

Check out the EMERSON LAKE and PALMER song "The Barbarian". There's a blast beat near the end of the song. Recorded in 1970.

I think the earliest blastbeat was before sandoval et all, I also don't think it was a jazz drummer either...

Anyway, here's a quote of danny lilker (ex-anthrax/SOD/Nuclear assult et all) answering a question on this very subject:

And a blast beat is sort of "hit the snare and bass drum alternately as fast as you can with the cymbal/hihat on the bass drum stroke" something like that anyway, alternatively everything in sync at once. Basically, it has to be fast to be a blastbeat
