Bloated records...

Here's something a little different for you guys.
What's a "bloated" record, in your opinion & what 9-10 tracks would you say are keepers?
For example, I would say Dokken's Back for the Attack was a "bloated" record.
I think they could have just kept the 10 best tracks & it would have made it a solid record. What 10 tracks would you have kept?
I remember back when this disc came out the biggest selling point, was that it "featured" over 60 minutes of music! In fact there was a sticker on there that stated this. So what?! 9-10 tracks would have done the trick...
I'll be back with my pick...
Yours?!

Maiden's "X Factor". I think it just goes on & on a bit too long. It would have been much stronger sans "The Unbeliever" and "Fortunes of War".

Same can be said for Maiden's "Fear of the Dark". Remove the awful "Apparition", "Weekend Warrior" and it would be much stronger with the remainign 10 songs.

Metallica's BLACK album. 12 songs in total. 4 songs too many.
If it only had "Sandman", "Sad", "Unforgiven", "Roam", "Misery", "God", "Nothing Else Matters" and "Wolf" it would have aged much better.

Ozzy's "No More Tears". Again, by the early 90s, bands were too interested in adding tons more minutes of music (due to the fact that vinyl and it's 48 minutes was no longer a factor). Waaayy too much filler on this otherwise strong album.

Man, it's funny you bring this up. It's bothered me pretty much since the c.d. revolution happened. Bands used to come up with twenty or so songs, then cut the fat for the actual album. Now, most of the fat is on the disc. I think a lot of mediocre records could be considered kick ass, if this problem didn't exist.

I'll be back with a list!

I'm not sure what are you talking about. If I buy an album it has to have 90% of good songs otherwise I don't care for it. Usually also I found that there's one song that saves the album (being the others less than oustanding but not bad).

And I disagree with CDs. I'm pissed when bands comes with 35 min albums, I expect any album to be 46 or more minutes of decent music. IMO if you cannot pull an album with those characteristics, you better don't record it at all in CD format.

I have to disagree. Why do you need 80 mins to make your point.
A good band can do it in 40 mins. Half the time.
If there are 15 songs on a disc, chances are 5-6 tracks are filler, that is
with 90% of the bands. Yes, even if they are a great band.
I loved the old formats, 60's, 70's & 80's where a band put 9-10 great songs
on a record & that was it. Boom! They blasted you with 35 min. of their prime stuff...
I still don't have a list, but I will be back with something....

Replace "Nothing El$e Matter$" and "$ad But True" with "Holier Than Thou" and "Through The Never," and I'd agree with you.

If you are good you can make 80 mins worth and therefore the price of the slab. So why to conform with less than 46 min if you can really make it?

That's my thought, we just beg to differ :D

I hate the last two songs on the latest Megadeth album, if they left those out it would have been a much better album and it still would have contained 10 songs.
