Not really, it's a marathon, and a huge one at that. Even the incredibly small-time running events my wife takes part in are filmed to that standard. Not to mention everyone's got such good cameras in their pockets these days, it's just no wonder.

Exactly this, there are far more crowded areas, and far more high profile areas that could've been attacked if it was global terror/attack on the state such as Downtown Manhattan.

According to my dad the real reason for these bombings is because of:

"McCain: Immigration-reform bill announcement postponed - A bipartisan group of senators has decided to postpone the announcement of a much-anticipated immigration-reform bill on Tuesday in the wake of bombings at the Boston Marathon."

So his theory for all of this has to do with the much anticipated immigration-reform bill, this is just a way for the government to sway away, delay, focus on other matters. Which I guess would explain the reason for the drill and other speculations.
