It's just a brainstorm so here are a few unemployed guitarists that come to mind...

1.) Pepper Keenan...formerly of Corrosion of Conformity and Down.
2.) Marcus Sunesson and/or Marko Tervonen...formerly of The Crown
3.) James Murphy...formerly of like 50 fucking bands including Death, Testament, Cancer, Obituary, Disincarnate and Malevolent Creation
4.) Darrell Abbott (aka Dimebag)...formerly of Pantera, Anthrax, and the wildly unsuccesfull Damageplan.
5.) Zack Wylde...formerly of Sherinian, Ozzy, and Black Label Society.
6.) Jerry Cantrell...formerly of Alice in Chains and now doing some solo shit last I heard

I guess a couple of those guys aren't unemployed...yet.

um..... Pepper, Zakk, Diamond Darrel and Jerry aren't unemployed. Apparently James is still sick from what I hear, plus he's working on his Death "tribute".

6.) Jerry Cantrell...formerly of Alice in Chains and now doing some solo shit last I heard
that....would....be.....weird.....oh....so...very....weird....
in all reality i dont know who could replace Smyth..im sure theres someone but i cant really come up with anyone thats free to do that...hmmm

Er...the guy who replaced Rob Flynn in Vio-Lence. What's his name again??
You mean Troy Fua, the guy Rob replaced in VIO?? The same guy who rejoined the band recently?? :err: Troy's actually not doing anything I know of......

Let's Jim Durkin (although he's doing Dreams Of Damnation), Marco Lima (who is in Jim's other band, PWM~ although the Pagans aren't doing anyhting right now), Craig Loccicerro (I don't care what anyone says, he'd be smarter to do something with Testament that anyone from Systematic)......

ummmm Im gonna have to say Alex Skolnik, heres the perfect opportunity for a reunion.....now that would be sick
since that probably wont be happening I think whoever Testament gets should have to be able to pull of the lead guitar parts...smyth didnt play anywhere close to skolnik. I think the best suggestion yet was Danny Spitz, it should be someone well rooted in Thrash Metal.
I wonder if it even matters who they pick anyway, arent like 6 songs already written....they are heading into the studio soon. So would the person they pick even have influence on the upcoming CD?
I dont know about the rest of you, but Id like a return somewhat to the Classical roots Testament once had, some solos and more melody would be nice, kinda like what Exodus did with "Shroud of Urine". Tempo of the Damned is a masterpiece, so that means Testament needs to step up and deliver a killer album, and their just the band to do it. Id also like to see Souza do some guest vocals, hell even have Alex throw in a guest lead, Im sure however it comes out though Ill be happy just to have a new Testament music.

I don't know if there's use in speculating- we just need to wait for Chuck and Eric's decision. I really hope they'll announce it soon and won't recruit Chlasciak, but someone more talented and renowned. And, yeah, Gustafson, Loccicero and Durkin are great ideas, but it's not really probable that one of them will join T, I think...

- Paul Masdival (Death, Cynic) ..would be on my first vote, awesome guitarist, composer, shredder, and he's not doing anything a.t.m as far as I know.

-Shannon Hamm (Death, Control Denied)
-James Murphy
-Craig Locicero (Testament, Forbidden)
-Randall Shawver (Iced Earth, Yuhrott)

Greg Locicero and Glen Alvelais may be good choices.
Or the guitarist of Sadus may be killer.

I don't think Durkin can fill Steve's shoes.

What about Juan Garcia? He is one of the best thrash guitarists of all time but he is currently busy with Agent Steel I think. And he should be!

Jeff Waters kicks ass but I prefer him play in Savatage instead of Testament. And I think he will :)

I think they should get Chris Lykins or Tommi Vetterli if they still play :)

My picks
1. Alex. If that happend, I'd be at every show...........
2. Glen. VERY good
3. Locicero. WOOOOOT!
4. Calvert. what can youy say?! Wickedness.
5. Buckethead.............so someone can grab his KFC get up and we can see who it really is :tickled:

Oh well, at least I got to see Smyth with them twice in a week or so.
