BREAKING NEWS: ATHEIST REFORMS

sorry guys, i used to live in bumfuckhickville and under a rock. hence I don't make 'best of ____' lists yet. as well as not hearing numerous bands

Cool news, but didn't they reform a few years back and then do nothing? I hope it works out this time. I'm one of the odd ones who likes Elements a lot. JayKeeley just spoke with derision about a few of my favorite all-time releases, so maybe I'm in the minority around these parts. I never got into Pestilence, though; I either heard the wrong tunes or they are incorrectly grouped with Atheist and Cynic.

Pestilence was nothing like Atheist ... they shared a bass player at one point, Tony Choy ...
Pestilence did not stand the test of time too well, me thinks.

They sounded different, but their the technical, jazzy death metal of the same era alone is enough to make a comparison appropriate. Not a fan of Testimony of the Ancients, even?

It's true, Tony Choy stepped in for "Testimony of the Ancients"...but then they 'progressed' into the whole prog-fusion thing with "Spheres" and it fell flat on its face.

Yep, sorry, just not into the technical stuff like "Focus", "Unquestionable Presence", or "Spheres". It's for the same reason I don't like modern jazz.

Death metal is my least favoUrite genre, on the whole. I've spent a lot of time recently going through lots of the old school releases. I think on the whole, the two real standout bands thus far have been Celtic Frost and Morbid Angel. Of course, Slayer's innovation goes without saying. I'll probably start a thread one day posting some comments on random old school albums.

For the most part, here are the 'death metal' bands I like:

Celtic Frost
Morbid Angel
Pestilence prior to Spheres (and for the same reason, Sepultura up to Arise - even if they were labelled thrash)
Aeternus (first 3 releases)
Destroyer 666
Rudra
Melechesh
...and most recently, Gojira.

There are others (like Death, Amorphis' "Tales", and The Chasm), but those listed are the main ones. There is a natural pattern there, one of an epic, organic, and atmospheric nature.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Nile up to "Darkened Shrines".

I own both Piece of Time and Unquestionnable Presence. I think for starters it's better to start with Piece of Time with is more thrash-oriented songs and is more accessible. UP is still a must have though.

I would not put Slayer in either the DM or Thrash category ... i don't know how to classify them really.

Gojira is not death metal either, far from it ... i could not classify them either.

Jay, seriously consider checking out Krisiun's Conquerors of Armeggeddon and Angel Corpse's The Inexorable. Both are probably the best in black-death metal and both, I feel, are atmospheric as all hell. Like, not in a 'wintry, forest of October' type of way, but more like in a 'your flesh is disintegrating off the bones from smoldering flames' type of thing. Actually, I feel like I'm in hell when I listen to those releases. It's great.

I see. I listen to a fair amount of death metal, but am much more casual about it than most metal fans. I'm a really big Celtic Frost fan too. Morbid Tales was probably my first true underground album. Picked it up mid 80's, totally by chance. You remember how it was 20 years ago--when info on metal was hard to come by, outside Hit Parader. Into the Pandemonium is still one of my favorite albums, but their first three are stellar.

Krisiun and Angel Corpse. Gotcha, thanks.

Genres are the lamest of lame.

Naglar might be melodic black metal, but they call themselves death metal.

Slayer all of a sudden may not be thrash according to our resident Slayer SME, lurch70, and yet they were one of the "big 4".

Possessed, which overall were hugely obsessed with the Slayer sound are death metal because (a) they use harsher vocals and (b) have a song called "Death Metal".

Venom have a song called "Black Metal" but they're only BM in ideology alone! Or are they?

Gojira are heavilly influenced by Morbid Angel and Voivod but no way are they in the death metal category.

Sepultura are heavier than 90% of death metal bands, but yet they're labelled thrash by most.

Damn them all to hell.
