I know I'm late to the party, but I just discovered this totally brutal band that is fucking SICK: Father Befouled
They aren't brutal in the traditional sense, like Devourment or Suffocation. They're a lot like Incantation, but HEAVIER and more brutal, in a doomy way. Like, its incredible. They hit you SO hard, but they don't play blast beats all that often. They've got a few straight up fast songs, but a lot of it is fucking brutal hammer-pounding doom armageddon shit. Its nuts. They should be huge; nobody sounds like them. Incantation sorta does, but these guys go wayyy beyond that, with this heavy oppressive atmosphere like Catacombs' "In The Depths of R'lyeh"

Anything by Devourment is great but the first edition of Butcher the Weak (the green cover) is the worst thing by them

and I gotta confess... I talked them up a litttttle bit too much. I still like them, but.... I donno I guess cuz they were really different that it got me excited more than I should've been, haha

I don't know if they're good or not but I do know they are not a brutal death metal band which is what the thread is about.
but there can be different kinds of brutal.
Like, i'd consider some shit from De Profundis to be brutal, just cuz its fucking badass and crazy energetic and pummeling, but its no Suffocation/Dying Fetus chugchugchug-ing, which I'm guessing is what most people think when they hear "brutal".

Whatever you consider brutal is irrelevant. Regardless of the meaning of the word in other contexts in the context of death metal it means Suffocation/Dying Fetus chugchugchug-ing. You don't go around saying that the "black" in black metal can mean many things to different people. I'm sorry to pick on you here but this happens a lot and it's annoying to people who actually want to talk about real brutal death metal.
