I love these guys guitar sound does anyone know what Andy used when he records these guys I'm trying to get close to there album sound on my axe fx. Either the Poison album or Scream aim fire. Thanks

Andy didn't record them. Colin Richardson did. He used a tubescreamer into a Peavey 6505 into a Mesa Rectifier Cab mic'd with a SM57 and a MD421.

I do believe that Andy mixed and helped produce the song "Hit The Floor" from The Poison. I believe that's the only song though.

Colin Richardson posted his bullet for my valentine settings here once...

Fuck it, I'm feeling generous so I'll find it:

"Here is the Bullet guitar chain ESP guitar with EMG 81 into a Maxon overdrive then into Andy's 5150, cab wise a Mesa Boogie with slanted front , Mic's 57 and 421 into Neve 1073 mic pre's with no EQ
Peavey 5150 settings
Rhythm channel
pre amp 6.5
Bass 6
mid 2
treble 5.5
post gain 3
resonance 7
presense 8

Cheers guy's."

Örr... Woot?

Rhythm Channel? Crunch on/off (lol)? Bright off? No settings for Maxon overdrive? Was it there just for boost or w/ lots of gain?

Btw does anyone even use here 5150 rhythm channel for high gain guitars?

Rhythm Channel, almost always, with crunch in and a tubescreamer with drive on minimum for the main rhythm guitar sound.
Back off the mids and drive the presence.
On its own it may not sound like the sound on albums but double or quad tracked and mixed with the bass you will start to understand.

That preset from Mr Colin himself will give you a great sound right off the bat!

Clearly the crunch switch is on if you're wanting a vaguely decent distorted sound. Not sure about the bright switch, I'd assume it's on as I find the 6505 can be pretty dull without it. Not sure about the maxon settings but I did see an article about Colins guitar recording that had a picture of a tubescreamer with all the knobs at 12:00

I've used the rhythm channel a couple of times, it's a bit less aggressive than the lead channel and the midrange is a little different.

Thanks for the info!

I'll try that out for sure when I'm next time in our rehearsal space w/ 5150 II. Shame I don't have a tubescreamer available :/

I have used only the rhythm channel for lead sounds (cause the midrange is way more "tighter" and "cleaner") and for some rock/crunch stuff, but maybe there is a point to try to achieve a good rhythm sound with it. Those settings just seemed like almost the same I use with the Lead channel, so I wasn't sure about it. That pre on 6,5 is pretty ridicously low gain on the rhythm channel without external boost/drive.

scream aim fire is one of my "reference" mixes that I like to analyze. I love the fullness.

I think the beauty of that album was the mix in general though. Everything is smooth and is just glued in together. The Bass mixing also compliments the guitars so much for that full thick sound!

Thanks this helps a lot. Now I just gotta see if my axe fx can get close

I agree 100% great sounding album. The guitar tone I chase on a daily basis lol

I much preferred The Poison to be honest, SAF is too dry sounding.
