I found the tuning is drop C with A = 430hz which places it between drop B and C with A as 440hz. I could never get the tuning right with 440hz so figured they must have changed the reference and that seems to match perfectly.

So if they started in drop C and slowed down the track slightly this could explain the A = 430hz?? Ive read on here somewhere that he uses what they call 'the Dolby trick' to add air to the guitars..Id love to try one of those units.

For what I know guitars are 5150 with TS9 and Marshalls 1960A with GT75.

To me, this album is also a benchmark and milestone concerning drum tones. Like them way more than the so often heralded 'Black Album' tones, even though they might have been influential to this record.

Anyone got any info on the drums? I'm especially curious if and to what extend samples were used.

yes the drums on this album are very powerful. even 16 years later!!! great production!

I was in a band with Chris (Kontos) for a couple years. Not sure if they used samples, but what I can tell you about Chris' playing is he pounds the drums like a 1000lb gorilla. Like seriously, that dude plays fucking hard. James did a couple projects with him too and I'm sure would concur. The guy is a monster. Never liked machine head though. I do remember when I listened to BME that the toms sounded pretty "samply" in the fills.

Yeah, I always thought of Kontos as a heavy hitter. But that being said, I heard that he delivered some abysmal performances on the 'BME' tour which led to his firing.

There's a lot to that story, and two sides as always. The only thing that I can confirm about that is that Chris was extremely sick with a serious throat infection and put his health before the band.

Love this album, my favourite track is Blood for Blood, mainly cause of the tone

Kontos filled in in 96, between Tempesta and Hoglan. Shortly before the band broke apart for about half a year.

Edit: Actually, after Tempesta and before Kontos, Jon Dette had one of his stints with the band. Goat damn had they many drummers... and so many awesome ones nonetheless.

I'm not trying to start an argument here but how would the guitar player from kill to this know? And when you say "mentioned everywhere" do you mean on the Internet? Are you sure your source is reliable?
